Emmitsburg, Md. (October 19, 2014) – The Mount men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over visiting Rider in Sunday afternoon's fall finale to give Head Coach Phil Hammond his 100th career win with the men's program.
Mount St. Mary's (2-0) swept the doubles matches before taking four of the six singles matches from Rider (1-6). Hammond, who is in his 11th season with the Mount, has also compiled 127 career wins with the women's team.
On Sunday, junior Austin Blake paired with freshman Brandon Wortkotter for an 8-3 No. 1 doubles win over Chris Popso and Chanton Phan. Sophomores Darren Mast and Louis Tonon cruised to an 8-0 No. 2 doubles victory, while the senior duo of Adam Salam and Will Briscoe were 8-2 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Blake also dominated his No. 1 singles match versus Phan, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win. Playing No. 3, Mast was able to navigate past Rider's Adam Levi, 6-0, 6-3, to move into a tie for first on the team with six singles wins this fall.
Tonon added a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 4 against Jeremy Van Herwarde, and Wortkotter was a 6-1, 6-1 winner against Matthew Begley in his No. 5 singles match.
Sunday's match concludes the fall portion of the schedule for the Mountaineers.
