Mount Tennis Courts | Emmitsburg, Md.
MOUNT UPDATE: The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team will play its final match of the fall season on Sunday, Oct. 19, versus Rider at the Mount Tennis Courts. The Mount has not competed since Oct. 4-5 at the Mount St. Mary's Invitational with the Oct. 11 match versus La Salle rained out.
ON THE RISE: Sophomore Mateo DeSomocurcio and Darren Mast are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 on the team for singles victories this fall. DeSomocurcio has registered a team-best six wins with Mast right behind with five.
LAST TIME OUT: The Mount completed a successful two-day Mount St. Mary's Invitational with wins in the flight A and B doubles championship matches, as well as in the flight B singles championship. In flight A doubles, junior Austin Blake and freshman Brandon Wortkotter downed teams from Gettysburg, Loyola and Howard to claim the top spot. Sophomore Darren Mast, who also won the flight B singles title, paired with his classmate Louis Tonon for the flight B doubles championship.
ABOUT RIDER: The Broncs lost their first five matches of the fall before defeating St. Francis Brooklyn, 4-3, last time out on Oct. 14. Jeremy Van Herwarde, who has played No. 3, 4 and 5 singles at points this fall, leads Rider with three singles victories.
LAST SEASON VS. RIDER: In last fall's 7-0 road win, the Mount overpowered the Broncs with three doubles victories and straight-set wins in all six of the singles matches. Austin Blake and Peter Salomon headlined the Mount's victory with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. RIDER: Mount St. Mary's is undefeated in the nine all-time meetings between the two sides dating back to the first matchup in 1992. Sunday's match will mark the fifth-consecutive fall the Mount has faced Rider.
CENTURY MARK: A win over Rider would give Head Coach Phil Hammond his 100th career victory with the Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team. Hammond, who is in his 11th season at the helm for both the men's and women's squads, has won 126 matches with the women's team.
