Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) scored back-to-back goals in the second half to give Mount St. Mary's the lead and senior Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) grabbed two draw controls late in the match to help secure a 13-10 victory against Longwood in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Monday afternoon.
Rufolo scored off a feed from Erin Seipp (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Preparatory) at 36:30 and then converted a free-position attempt at 39:04 to give the Mount (1-5) the lead it would not relinquish. With the Mountaineers clinging to an 11-10 lead, Semler scooped up two-straight draw controls that lead to a pair of goals to help seal the victory. Semler, who had one draw control last season, added two goals on the afternoon.
Seipp and Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) paced Mount St. Mary's with a goal and two assists apiece. Lindsay Diaz (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) added two goals while Allie Fife(Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Shelby Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) each registered a goal and an assist. The Mount had 10 different players record a point in the winning effort.
Jamie Brentlinger fueled the Lancers (1-4) with four goals. Jessica Rudloff and Alexa Anderson each posted two markers while Sam Stifler and Hannah Riggs also found the twine in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's rallied to take the lead and held on for a 13-10 win for its first win of the season and its second-straight victory against Longwood.
Trailing 7-5, the Mount scored five unanswered goals to take the lead it would not relinquish. Larrimore started the spurt with a tally off a Seipp feeder at 36:18. The freshman then found a streaking Rufolo down the middle to tie the game 12 seconds later. Rufolo then gave the Mountaineers the lead when she converted a free-position opportunity at 39:04. Larrimore returned the favor to Seipp at 44:09 before Morgan Dalton (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) capped the 5-0 run with an unassisted tally at 47:23.
The Lancers scored consecutive goals to trim the margin to 10-9 when Anderson (48:04) and Brentlinger (52:48) each found the twine unassisted.
Semler helped regain a two-goal lead for Mount St. Mary's off a pass from Larrimore at 54:56, but Brentlinger answered 10 seconds later to make it a one-goal difference again.
Semler then grabbed the ensuing draw control to set up a Fife tally from Lyles at 56:30 and then scooped up the next draw to set up a Fife to Meaghan Conlon (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) to seal the win
Longwood jumped out to a 2-0 and a 5-3 lead in the match. Riggs (5:29) and Rudloff (6:39) started the scoring with tallies to give the Lancers a 2-0 edge.
The Mount responded with the next three scores to grab a 3-2 advantage. Lyles (7:12) and Megan Gluck (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) (10:59) started the spurt by converting a pair of 8-meter tallies. For Gluck, it was her first collegiate goal. Diaz then gave the Mountaineers a 3-2 lead with an unassisted marker at 12:58.
Longwood came back to score the next three goals to take a 5-3 margin thanks to free-position goals by Anderson (19:02), Rudloff (24:54) and Brentlinger (25:22).
Diaz ended the scoring in the first half when she converted an 8-meter shot at the buzzer to cut the margin to 5-4 at halftime.
The Lancers opened the second half by scoring two of the first three goals. Brentlinger (32:14) and Stifler (35:03) each found the back of the net sandwiched in between a Semler unassisted tally at 33:36. Mount St. Mary's then scored the next five goals and held on for the victory.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made eight saves for the Mount while Mollie Zimmerman turned away 12 shots for Longwood.
Gabe Little (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) paced the defense with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Diaz had five draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers while Conlon tallied three draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win.
The Mountaineers exploded for a season-high 13 goals after notching 13 total goals in their last four games combined.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action when it concludes a three-game homestand against Virginia Tech. Game time is 12 p.m.
