Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – Iona downed Mount St. Mary's 17-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford), Erin Seipp (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Preparatory), Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), Morgan Dalton (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Shelby Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) each found the twine for the Mount (0-5) in the loss. It was Dalton's first collegiate goal.
Kylie Gregory paced the Gaels (4-2) with six goals. Emily Taddei added three tallies and two assists while Megan Testoni registered a hat trick in the winning effort.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the early advantage before Iona rolled off the next 12 goals and never looked back to take the first-ever meeting between the two teams and improve to 4-0 against the Northeast Conference (NEC). The Gaels also defeated NEC foes Sacred Heart, LIU Brooklyn and Central Connecticut State earlier this season.
Trailing 2-0, Iona closed the first half by scoring the final 12 goals to take a 12-2 lead at halftime. Gregory started the run with a tally off a Brittany Mabus assist at 2:17 before Casey Scully found the twine unassisted at 2:56 to even the game at 2. Taddei then found Gregory at 4:50 to give the Gaels the lead they would not relinquish. Testoni (5:01) and Brenna Lade (6:46) each scored before Gregory notched a natural hat trick with scores at 16:30, 16:58 and 19:14 for an 8-2 margin. Taddie registered consecutive free-position tallies at 22:53 and 23:50 before Gregory (25:44) and Nina Veneziale (27:29) closed the first-half scoring to take a 10-goal lead at the break.
Lyles ended the 12-0 run with her second career goal at 33:27, but Testoni answered right back at 33:55. The two teams traded goals again after Seipp notched her second goal of the season at 38:03 and Taddei found the twine at 38:39. Larrimore notched her sixth goal of the year at 40:59 to trim the margin to 14-5, but Testoni (41:45), Nicole Brancaccio (57:14) and Casey Palmer (58:23) to seal the victory.
Mount St. Mary's started the game with a pair of goals in the first 92 seconds to take an early 2-0 edge. Semler started the scoring with a free-position tally 42 seconds into the match before Dalton converted an 8-meter chance at 1:32 for her first collegiate marker. The Gaels would then score 12 unanswered and 17 of the final 20 tallies to go on for the win.
Sarah Jane Leder (Manalapan, N.J./Colts Neck) made five saves in 26 minutes while Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) turned away four shots in 34 minutes for the Mount. Maria Ortiz made 11 saves for Iona.
Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) had a team-high three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Lindsay Diaz (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) added two draw controls, two caused turnover and a ground ball in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday at home against Longwood. Match time is 4 p.m.
