Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. – Johns Hopkins defeated Mount St. Mary's 18-8 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Nicole Price (White Hall, Md./North Harford) and Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall), the Mount's (0-1) top two scorers from 2011, paced the Mountaineers with two goals and an assist apiece. Esther Rufolo added a goal and an assist in the season opener.
Taylor D'Amore fueled the Blue Jays (2-0) with four goals and three assists. Colleen McCaffrey and Rachel Ballatori each added three tallies and an assist while Candace Rossi chipped in a marker and three assists in the winning effort.
Mount St. Mary's battled Johns Hopkins, a team receiving votes in the IWLCA Top-20 poll, close for the first 15 minutes of the game, but the Blue Jays rolled off six-straight goals and never looked back for its ninth win against the Emmitsburg program.
The Mount grabbed the early lead when Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville, Md./North Harford) found the back of the twine off a Rufolo assist at 2:17 for a 1-0 edge.
Johns Hopkins responded to record five of the next six tallies to take a 5-2 advantage. D'Amore scored unassisted at the three-minute mark before McCaffrey registered back-to-back scores off feeders from Rossi at 5:11 and 6:32 for a 3-1 lead.
Lindsay Diaz (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) momentarily halted the Blue Jays surge with an unassisted tally at 8:35, but Sarah Taylor found the back of the net off an assist by Rossi seven seconds later and before D'Amore scored unassisted at 10:57 for a three-goal margin.
The Mountaineers answered with consecutive tallies to trim the margin to 5-4 and force a Johns Hopkins' timeout. Semler scored unassisted at 11:32 and then the senior connected with Price at 13:01 to make it a one-goal match.
After the timeout, the Blue Jays registered six-unanswered markers to grab an 11-4 advantage. D'Amore started the spurt at 14:33 before Taylor scored back-to-back goals at 15:34 and 16:35. Ballatori then registered consecutive scorers at 16:45 and 22:30 before D'Amore capped the run that she started with her fourth goal of the afternoon at 23:34.
Semler stopped the run and ended the scoring in the first half when she took a pass from Price at 26:10 to cut the margin to 11-5 at halftime.
Johns Hopkins opened the second half with five-straight tallies to take a 16-5 lead. McCaffrey (30:32), Rossi (32:01), Courtney Schweizer (36:26), Sammy Cermack (40:13) and Ballatori (40:53) each posted a marker in the spurt.
The Mountaineers responded with three-straight goals. Price found the twine for the second time on the day at 48:43 before Rufolo twinkled the twine off a Shelby Lyles (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) assist at 51:17. Erin Seipp (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Preparatory) then capped the three-goal outburst with her first collegiate goal with 4:48 left.
Jenna Kasmarik sealed the Blue Jays win with two goals in the final two minutes.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made seven saves for Mount St. Mary's while KC Emerson turned away four shots in the final 33:50 of the match.
Diaz paced the Mount with five draw controls and two ground balls while Price had a team-high three ground balls.
Along with Siepp, Morgan Dalton (Annapolis, Md./Archbishop Spalding), Melissa Cox (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll), Megan Gluck (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) and Hannah Gutcher (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) each made their collegiate debut. Cox and Seipp each made their debut in the starting lineup.
