Box Score Mount St. Mary's was edged by Saint Joseph's, 1-0, in the home opener on Sunday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. Goalkeeper Alicia Miller made seven saves in the loss.
Saint Joseph's (1-2-1) scored the game-winning goal when Jen Pfeiffer drilled a free kick from 25 yards out just inside the left-hand post on the low side 6:49 into the first overtime period.
Miller was outstanding in goal to keep the Mount in the game, including a pair of stops in the overtime period. Pfeiffer had a chance to end the game just 2:30 into the overtime, but was denied by Miller on a point-blank shot. Miller then made a nice stop on the ensuing corner kick when she stuffed a back-heel shot by Maggie Lupinski right in front of the goal.
The Hawks had a chance to end the game with two minutes left in regulation when Mo Hawkins broke in free alone on goal, but sent her shot wide left.
Miller made a pair of saves late in the first half to keep the game scoreless. With six minutes left in the half, Saint Joseph's found Cailyn Alfieri wide open from six yards out in front of the goal, but Miller came up with the big stop. Just under a minute later, she made a stop on Maggie Lupinski.
The Mount (1-1) had its best scoring chance of the game with just under 18 minutes left. Keriann McGettigan's free kick went straight into goalkeeper Christine Neal.
Saint Joseph's held a 16-to-8 edge in shots in the game while the Mount held a 7-to-5 margin in corner kicks.
Neal made three saves for the shutout victory while Miller had seven for the Mount. McGettigan, Sadie Winship and Kelly Baker each had a team-high two shots for the Mountaineers.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, September 9, with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Howard at Waldron Family Stadium.
