Emmitsburg, Md. (September 2, 2011)--A pair of freshman had outstanding debuts to lead the Mount St. Mary's cross country teams at the season-opening Mount St. Mary's 5K Duals on campus.
Freshman Tommy Gruschow finished in fifth place to help the Mount men to a fourth-place finish while freshman McKenzie Doyle finished 17th overall as the Mount women place fifth at the meet.
The meet was scored in a dual-scoring format with each school receiving a dual-meet score against each of the other opponents.
On the men's side, Gruschow finished the 5-kiliometer course in a time of 15:36.51 for his fifth-place mark. Senior Dylan Bernard, a three-time All-Northeast Conference selection, was the Mount's second-fastest performer, finishing 14th with a mark of 15:43.69.
Senior Gigi Gibilisco had a strong showing, finishing 22nd with a time of 15:51.12 while junior Chris Swisko was 28th with a mark of 16:00.21. Freshman Kevin Pitts rounded out the Mount's top five by finishing 45th with a mark of 16:21.28.
American's Mark Allen was the individual winner with a time of 15:25.60, finishing ahead of teammates Mark Leininger and John Pope.
American went a perfect 6-0 in dual scores, ahead of Maryland (4-1-1), UMBC (4-1-1), the Mount (3-3), Navy (2-4), St. Bonaventure (1-5) and George Washington (0-6).
Doyle paced the Mount women's squad, finishing in 17th place with a time of 19:33.14 for the 5-kilometer course. Junior Megan Kinsella, a two-time All-NEC selection, was the Mount's second-fastest runner with a time of 19:40.01, good for 21st overall. Kathryn Franke (30th, 20:10.70), Desiree Scott (31st, 20:11.01) and Colleen Smith (46th, 21:07.34) rounded out the Mount's top five.
American's Octavia Rinehardt was the individual winner with a time of 18:02.99. Rinehardt won the race for the second time as she was the winner in 2008 as well.
American went 6-0 in the dual match format to take first place, followed by Maryland (5-1), George Mason (4-2), UMBC (3-3), Mount St. Mary's (2-4), St. Bonaventure (1-5) and George Washington (0-6).
The Mount returns to action on September 17 at the Monmouth Invitational.
