Box Score Lawrenceville, N.J. (August 20, 2011)--Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) buried a free kick from 23 yards out with 49 seconds left in the first overtime to lift Mount St. Mary's past Rider, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon.
Winship took the free kick just outside the top of the penalty box and slipped her shot just under the cross bar in the upper right hand corner to send the Mount home with the victory. Winship's goal was the 10th in her career, moving her into ninth place on the Mount's all-time goal list.
The win was just the second in a season opening game for the Mount since the program started in 1992. The Mount is now 2-18 all time in season openers with the last win coming in 2005 over Delaware State.
Goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made 12 saves in the game to record her eighth career shutout, good for second all-time in program history.
"It was a well-played game by both sides," said Mount St. Mary's head coach Tom Gosselin. "It was a fantastic finish by Sadie. The entire team had a stellar effort today, especially Alicia Miller in goal."
Rider held a 26-to-17 advantage in shots in the game, including a two-to-one edge in the overtime period. The Mount had six corner kicks to Rider's five. Winship led the Mount with five shots with Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) chipping in four.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday, August 28, with a1:00 p.m. game at Iona.
