Box Score EMMITSBURG, Md. - Quinnipiac scored six of the final eight goals
to come from behind to defeat Mount St. Mary's 11-8 in Northeast
Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on Thursday.
Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) paced the Mount (6-10,
5-3 NEC) with two goals and two assists while Nicole Price (White
Hall, Md./North Harford) and Kaitlyn Larrimore (Pylesville,
Md./North Harford) each had a hat trick. Brigid McTavish (Mount
Airy, Md./South Carroll)  made eight saves in the loss.
The Mountaineers go into the regular season finale against
Sacred Heart in a must-win situation. Mount St. Mary's and Sacred
Heart both will come into the match 5-3 in league play with the
winner assured of a spot in the upcoming NEC Tournament. Mount St.
Mary's would be eliminated with a loss, but the Pioneers could
still advance with a loss on Saturday if Monmouth falls to
Quinnipiac.
Lauren Matuszak fueled the Bobcats (10-4, 7-1 NEC) with three
goals and three assists. Devon Gibney added two goals and two
assists while Christine Sinnigen added two tallies. Noelle Martello
turned away nine shots in the winning effort.
The two teams battled back and forth for the first 40 minutes
before Quinnipiac rattled off four straight to take the lead and go
on for its sixth-straight win against the Mountaineers.
After Price converted a free-position attempt at 39:59 to hand
Mount St. Mary's a 6-5 edge, the Bobcats scored the next four
markers.
Matusczak tied the game off a feed from Sarah Allen at 40:52
before Lianne Toomey gave Quinnipiac the lead for good with an
unassisted tally at 41:34. Sinnegen found the twine unassisted at
42:41 before Matusczak set up Toomey at 43:10 to cap the 4-0 run
against give the Bobcats a 9-6 advantage.
The Mount answered with unassisted goals from Price (49:31) and
Larrimore (51:32) to trim the margin to 9-8, but Jennifer Skipper
found the twine off a feed from Matuszcak at 54:50 and Gibey sealed
the victory with an unassisted tally at 57:34.
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Marissa Caroleo had
a hand in the Bobcats' first two markers when she feed Matusczak at
4:40 and then scored herself off an Allen feeder at 13:21.
Mount St. Mary's answered with the next four goals to grab a 4-2
lead. Semler connected with Larrimore for back-to-back goals at
14:33 and 17:37 to knot the game at 2. Semler then scored on an
8-meter chance at 20:16 before Price found the twine unassisted at
22:21 for a two-goal margin.
Quinnipiac came back to score the next three goals, including
two to end the first half in a 4-all standstill. Gibney connected
with Sinnegen at 27:07 and Matusczak registered a free-position
marker at 28:34 to send the game to halftime all square.
Matusczak then gave the Bobcats the lead early in the second
half when she fed Gibney at 35:36.
The Mountaineers answered with two goals to grab a 6-5 edge.
Semler scored unassisted at 38:32 and Price posted an 8-meter score
at 39:59 to reclaim the advantage. Quinnipiac then rolled off four
straight and six of the last eight goals to come away with the
victory.
Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) registered three draw controls,
two caused turnovers and a ground ball while Gabe Little
(Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) tallied three caused turnovers, two
ground balls and a draw control. McTavish had a team-high five
ground balls and Price recorded four ground balls, two draw
controls and one caused turnover.
Mount St. Mary's will honor is seniors prior to the game against
Sacred Heart on Saturday.
