Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Robert Morris scored the final seven goals
to rally from a four-goal deficit and defeat Mount St. Mary's 15-12
in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on
Friday.
Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy)
paced the Mount (5-9, 4-2 NEC) with four goals while Mary MacAdam
(Palmyra, N.J./Holy Cross), Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall),
Nicole Price (White Hall, Md./North Harford) each scored two times
and Alexis Salerno (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Shelby
Lyles each found the twine once. Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy,
Md./South Carroll) had 13 saves in the loss.
Ashley Trombetta fueled the Colonials (6-8, 5-2 NEC) with three
goals and three assists while Colleen O'Donnell added four goals
and Elizabeth Sunseri chipped in two tallies and an assist. Kaitlin
Pentz made six saves in the winning effort.
Robert Morris held Mount St. Mary's off the scoreboard for the
final 19:13 of the match and went on a 7-0 run to rally to a 15-12
victory. The Colonials have now won the last two games in Moon
Township against the Mountaineers.
After MacAdam gave Mount St. Mary's a 12-8 lead on an unassisted
tally at 40:47, Robert Morris rolled off the final seven goals for
the come-from-behind victory.
Emily VanDyne started the decisive rally with an unassisted goal
at the 44-minute mark before Rachel Engel found the twine 25
seconds later unassisted. Sunseri cut the margin to one at 49:40
before Trombetta converted an 8-meter chance at 50:47 to even the
match at 12. Sunseri then set up Engel for the go-ahead goal at
54:05. Trombetta (56:00) and Sunseri (58:49) sealed the win with
two goals in the final four minutes.
The game started out well for the Mountaineers after jumping out
to a 4-1 lead. Semler got the scoring started with an unassisted
goal at 4:10. After VanDyne found the twine off a Trombetta assist
at 7:53, MacAdam (8:53), Rufolo (10:07) and Price each scored on
their own for a three-goal advantage.
The Colonials then rolled off the next three scores to tie the
game at 4. Trombetta had a hand in the first two tallies in the run
by finding the twine unassisted at 14:27 and then setting up
VanDyne at 15:39 before Cara Hernandez register a goal off a
Mackenzie Lawler feed at 16:27.
Mount St. Mary's then scored five of the final seven goals in
the half to take a 9-6 lead at the break. Salerno retook the lead
for the Mountaineers unassisted at 20:47 before Price converted a
free-position opportunity at 22:14 and Rufolo scored unassisted at
24:36 for a 7-4 lead.
O'Donnell answered for the Colonials with an 8-meter goal at
25:33 and an unassisted marker at 26:03 to trim the margin to 7-6.
Semler responded with a free-position score at 29:46 before Rufolo
won the draw and went down to find the back of the net with three
seconds left for a three-goal margin at halftime.
Robert Morris opened the second half with back-to-back goals
from O'Donnell thanks to an assist from Lauren Roberts at 32:43 and
then found the goal on her own at 33:12 to make it a one-goal
game.
The Mount then rolled off its third three-goal spurt to grab a
12-8 lead with 19:13 remaining. Rufolo started the run with her
fourth goal of the afternoon at 38:40. Lyles converted an 8-meter
chance for her first career goal at 39:45 and MacAdam scored for
the second time in the match at 40:47. Robert Morris then posted
the final seven goals and held the Mountaineers scoreless the rest
of the way to earn the victory.
After Mount St. Mary's took a 12-8 lead, the Mount won six of
the final eight draw controls but turned the ball over eight times
and only had two shots in the final 19 minutes of the game. Semler
hit the post with the Mountaineers clinging to a 12-10 edge and
Rufolo had a shot saved at the buzzer.
Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) paced the defense with three
ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls. Salerno
had two ground balls and a caused turnover. Rufolo had a
season-high seven draw controls and Meaghan Conlon grabbed three
draws in the loss.
Jost moved into eighth place in program history for career
ground balls (162) and eighth in caused turnovers (79) while Rufolo
moved into sixth place for career draw controls (103).
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday at Saint Francis
(Pa.). Game time is 12 p.m.
