EMMITSBURG, Md. - Nicole Price (White Hall, Md./North Harford)
powered an eight goal second half with two tallies and three
assists to pace Mount St. Mary's past Long Island 10-6 in Northeast
Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on Friday.
Price sparked a 4-0 run in the second half with two assists to
break a 3-all tie and then had a hand in the Mount's (4-7, 3-0 NEC)
final three goals with two markers and an assist in the final seven
minutes. The senior finished with three goals and a career-high
three assists for a career-best six points. Price has registered
seven goals and four assists in the last two games and leads the
team with 21 goals and seven assists for 28 points.
Jen Semler (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) notched her
third-straight hat trick and has posted three goals in five of the
last seven games for the Mountaineers while Brigid McTavish (Mount
Airy, Md./South Carroll) made seven saves in the winning
effort.
Katie Williams fueled the Blackbirds (0-9, 0-2 NEC) with two
goals and two assists and Kimberly Kovar added a tally and a
helper, and Jacqueline Simonian turned away 14 shots in the
loss.
For the third-straight game, Mount St. Mary's remained close
with its opponent through the first half and then used a strong
second half to come away with the victory for its third-straight
win.
With the game tied at 3, the Mount scored four unanswered goals
to take the lead for good. Semler started the spurt with a
free-position marker at 37:56 before Price handed out feeds to
Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) 13
seconds later and to Allie Fife (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) at
39:16. Semler capped the run she started with another 8-meter goal
at 44:38 for a 7-3 lead.
The Blackbirds posted the next two scores to trim the deficit to
7-5. Williams found Jenna Schauder at 46:17 and then Williams found
the back of the net unassisted at 49:15 to make it a two-goal
difference.
Price sparked a 3-0 run to seal the victory. The senior scored
back-to-back goals unassisted at 52:42 and at 55:06 before she
connected with Semler 44 seconds later to increase the advantage to
10-5.
Anna Kalata scored unassisted at 56:19, but the Mountaineers
came away with a 10-6 decision.
The two teams traded goals three times to start the game. Price
opened the scoring unassisted at 2:15 before Williams hooked up
with Kovar at the 21-minute mark to tie the game at 1.
Alexis Salerno (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Mellville) responded
at 21:14 unassisted for Mount St. Mary's only to see Sara LaNoir
find the back of the net unassisted at 22:44 to send the game to
halftime tied at 2.
Lindsay Diaz (Timonium, Md./Delaney) notched the first goal of
the second half unassisted at 34:48 before Kovar returned the favor
to Williams at 37:01. The Mount then closed the game by scoring
seven of the final 10 tallies thanks in part to Price's two goals
and three assists and three goals from Semler to put the game
away.
Along with her six points, Price added two ground balls, three
draw controls and a caused turnover. Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel
Air) added three ground balls and three draw controls while Rufolo
chipped in three ground balls, a draw control and a caused
turnover.
Jost moved into the program's career Top-10 in ground balls with
156. McTavish moved into second place for minutes played (2410) and
third in victories (17) for her career.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at Waldron Family Stadium on
Sunday against Wagner. Match time is 1 p.m.
