EMMITSBURG, Md. - UMBC defeated Mount St. Mary's 15-8 in
non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.
Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy)
paced the Mount (1-6) with four goals. Nicole Price (White Hall,
Md./North Harford) added two goals and an assist while Jen Semler
(Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) found the twine twice in the loss.
Amanda Pappas fueled the Retrievers (6-2) with four goals and
two assists while Emily Coady tallied three markers and three
assists in the winning effort.
UMBC scored seven-straight goals to take the lead and never look
back to improve to 11-1 against its in-state rival.
After Mount St. Mary's grabbed a 2-0 lead 4:05 into the match,
Coady fueled a 7-0 run with two goals and two assists. She got the
Retrievers on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally at 5:24
before she dished out an assist to Pappas at the six-minute mark to
tie the game at 2. Stodter then scored unassisted at 8:23 before
Pappas returned the favor to Coady at 8:55 for a 4-2 lead. After
Jennie Ballenger converted a free-position attempt at 9:35, Coady
fed Pappas again at the 11-minute mark and Erika Braerman capped
the 7-0 run with an unassisted tally at 26:51 for a 7-2 lead.
Semler halted the run with a goal off an Alexis Salerno (South
Setauket, N.Y./Ward Mellville) assist at 19:00, but Pappas answered
with an unassisted marker at 26:51. Rufolo closed the scoring in
the first half with a marker off a feed from Lindsay Diaz
(Timonium, Md./Dulaney) with eight seconds left in the stanza to
trim the margin to 8-4 at halftime.
Mount St. Mary's scored three of the first five goals in the
second stanza to cut the deficit to 10-7. Braerman started the
scoring with an unassisted goal at 32:20.
Rufolo then started a 3-1 surge when she took a pass from Mary
MacAdam (Palmyra, N.J./Holy Cross at 33:35. After Coady set up
36:58, Rufolo converted an 8-meter chance at 37:13 and Semler found
the back of the net off a Price feeder at 38:59 to make it a
three-goal match.
The Retrievers then rolled off the next four markers to grab a
14-7 advantage. Kristen Bilney (46:45), Coady (48:19), Stodter
(48:43) and Alicia Krause (51:54) each scored in the run.
Price ended the UMBC run with an unassisted tally at 55:29, but
Pappas closed out her four-goal afternoon with an unassisted score
with 16 seconds left in the game.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five
minutes of the game. Price scored unassisted at 2:11 and Rufolo
found the twine at 4:05 to give the Mount its only lead of the
game. UMBC then scored the next seven goals and went on for the
15-8 victory.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made five saves
for the Mount. Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) posted four
draw controls and two ground balls while Aly Jost (Abington,
Md./Bel Air) added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Pompa
became the eighth player in program history to grab 100 draw
controls in her career and moved into seventh place with 102
draws.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday night at home
against George Washington. Game time is 7 p.m.
