BALTIMORE, Md. - Johns Hopkins downed Mount St. Mary's 17-4 in
non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) and
Mary MacAdam (Palmyra, N.J./Holy Cross) each recorded two goals for
the Mount (0-2) in the loss.
Candice Rossi paced the Blue Jays (2-0) with five goals and one
assist. Colleen McCaffrey added three tallies and an assist while
Rachel Ballatori chipped in two markers and an assist in the
winning effort.
Johns Hopkins scored the first nine goals the match to take the
lead and never looked back for its eighth win in the series against
Mount St. Mary's.
McCaffrey got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at
1:57 before Rossi scored back-to-back tallies at 4:37 and 5:48 with
the second coming off a Taylor D'Amore assist. After Ballatori
scored off a Sarah Taylor assist at 6:17, Cami Kramer found the
twine unassisted at 7:56 for a 5-0 lead.
Rossi then scored unassisted at 9:22 and 10:22 before Brooke
Foussadier connected with D'Amore at 16:56. Ballatori helped cap a
9-0 start for the Blue Jays when she found the back of the net off
a Rossi helper at 18:55.
MacAdam momentarily halted the Johns Hopkins run with her first
collegiate tally at 19:21 on a free-position shot, but the Blue
Jays scored the final three tallies of the stanza to take a 12-1
lead at halftime. Rossi started the string of three straight to
close the stanza with her fifth marker of the afternoon 31 seconds
after MacAdam's first goal. McCaffrey then set up Ana Henrich at
26:22 and then scored on an 8-meter shot with 49 seconds left to
give Johns Hopkins a 12-1 lead at the break.
Johns Hopkins scored the first five goals of the second half to
grab a 17-1 advantage. Kramer scored off a Sammy Cermack assist 17
seconds into the second half, Ballatori set up McCaffrey at 40:35
before Taylor (45:38), Foussadier (48:22) and Courtney Schwiezer
(49:58) scored unassisted for the Blue Jays.
The Mountaineers scored the final three tallies of the game to
set the final score. Rufolo scored her third goal of the season at
51:47, MacAdam found the twine for the second time on the day at
54:08 before Rufolo scored at 57:13 to trim the score to 17-4.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made nine saves
for Mount St. Mary's while Cosette Larash turned away four shots
for Johns Hopkins.
Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) recorded four draw
controls and Meaghan Conlon (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) tallied two
ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover for the
Mount.
Mount St. Mary's makes its 2011 Waldron Family Stadium debut on
Sunday against Temple. Match time is 1 p.m.
