EMMITSBURG, Md. - Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West),
Meaghan Conlon (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and Esther Rufolo
(Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) each registered four
goals to lead Mount St. Mary's past Central Connecticut State 16-5
in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on
Friday.
Johnson and Conlon scored two goals in each half while Rufolo
posted one tally in the first stanza and three in the final frame.
Conlon gave the Mount (5-7, 3-3 NEC) 28 seconds into the match and
then broke a 3-all standstill with her second goal of the
afternoon. Johnson also had an assist to finish with five points
while Conlon also registered five draw controls, three ground balls
and two caused turnovers, and Rufolo also grabbed six draw controls
in the contest.
"I was proud of the team and their performance all over the
field today," said head coach Sonia LaMonica. "We stayed focused on
what we needed to do and it was especially rewarding to see so many
players contributing on the offensive end."
Jordan Certeza (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) added one
goal and four assists while Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton
Keough) recorded one tally and two assists in the winning
effort.
Michele Conway paced the Blue Devils (4-7, 0-6 NEC) with two
goals, and Ashley Perkoski and Meghan McCurry each had a goal and
an assist in the loss.
After Central Connecticut State tied the game at 3, Mount St.
Mary's finished the match by scoring 13 of the final 15 goals to
earn its 11th win against the Blue Devils.
Conlon broke the 3-all score with an unassisted tally at 20:48
before Rufolo found the back of the net unassisted at 21:59 for a
5-3 lead. Certeza then scored off a Kearney helper at 25:51 before
Certeza fed Johnson at 27:35 to give the Mountaineers a 7-3 lead at
halftime.
Rufolo then started the scoring in the second half on a
free-position goal at 32:51 before Certeza connected with Johnson
for the second time on the afternoon at 37:26. Lucy Pompa
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) found the twine off an Emily Kirby
(Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) assist 28 seconds later for a 10-3
lead.
Ashley Mara momentarily halted the Mount's offensive attack when
she scored unassisted at 42:28 to end a string of seven-straight
Mount St. Mary's goals.
Conlon then continued her career afternoon with back-to-back
goals. The sophomore, who came into the contest with two career
markers, scored off a Johnson assist at 46:09 before Kearney set up
Conlon's fourth goal of the afternoon at 50:55 to hand the Mount a
12-4 margin.
"Meaghan had a stellar game today," said LaMonica. "She was
aggressive to the cage and had great presence all over the field. I
am just excited for her to bring that out and to play to that
potential that I know she has."
Rufolo then scored unassisted at 53:04 before McCurry answered
off a Perkoski assist 23 seconds later to trim the margin to
13-5.
Mount St. Mary's closed the game with three straight goals to
seal the victory. Rufolo notched her second 8-meter tally of the
day at 53:45 before Certeza and Johnson found that connection again
at 54:26 and Kearney scored unassisted with 1:35 left for a 16-5
victory.
"As we progress through the vigorous schedule to end the season,
it is important that we continue to build for each game, said
LaMonica. "Our focus today was to work on the things that we needed
to do to get back on track and we want to use this performance to
push us through for the next couple of games."
The Mount started the game by scoring the first two tallies in a
span of 88 seconds. After Conlon found the twine off an Alexis
Salerno (South Setauket, N.Y./South Side) assist 28 seconds into
the match, Certeza dished out her first assist of the afternoon to
Kirby at 1:28.
Conway answered for Central Connecticut State off a feeder from
McCurry at 10:13 before Johnson converted a free-position chance at
13:06 to give the Mountaineers a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Devils answered with two-straight goals to tie the game
at 3. Conway found the twine off a Mackenzy Ryan assist at 14:14
before Perkoski scored off a Betsy Vendel helper at 17:19. Mount
St. Mary's then scored the next seven times and went on for a 16-5
win.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made three saves
for the Mount and Erin Delancey turned away 10 shots for Central
Connecticut State.
Along with her three points, Kearney registered five ground
balls, two caused turnovers a draw control. Johnson moved into
fifth place on the program's all-time career goals list (118) and
seventh in career points (139). Rufolo has grabbed the ninth most
draw controls in a single season with 37 in 2010.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Sunday against Bryant.
Game time is 1 p.m. Prior to the match, the Mount will honor
seniors Johnson, Kirby, Kearney, Katie Bollinger (Westminster,
Md./Winters Mill), Cait Fraccalvieri (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore),
Mary Kate Lavin (Ellicott City, Md./Maryvale) and Sydney Sykes
(Westminster, Md./Winters Mill).
