EMMITSBURG, Md. - Johns Hopkins defeated Mount St. Mary's 11-6
in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Tuesday.
Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) and Ashley Johnson
(Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) paced the Mount (6-8) with three goals
apiece. Kearney notched her second career hat trick while Johnson
scored at least three goals in a game for the eighth time this
season, including three-straight contests.
"You never know what end of the field Jackie is going to step up
on," said head coach Sonia LaMonica. "Jackie along with Ashley
really put our offense on their shoulders today."
Katie Duffey paced the Blue Jays (8-5) with a tally and four
assists while Colleen McCaffrey posted three goals in the win.
Johns Hopkins scored the first nine goals of the game before
Mount St. Mary's scored six of the last eight markers, but the Blue
Jays came away with its seventh win against its in-state rival.
McCaffrey started the game with a natural hat trick to give the
Blue Jays a 3-0 lead in their first trip to Emmitsburg since 2000.
She scored unassisted (2:45), on a free-position tally (3:23) and
off a Duffey feed (9:42) in her run.
After Cami Kramer scored off a Sam Schrum assist as 10:18,
Rachel Ballatori found the twine consecutive off feeders from
Duffey at 10:28 and 11:04. Candice Rossi then scored the next two
tallies unassisted at 13:16 and 44 seconds later before Duffey
capped the 9-0 run with an unassisted tally at 23:15.
Kearney, the current Northeast Conference (NEC) Defensive Player
of the Week, got the Mount on the scoreboard on an 8-meter goal at
23:54 before Johnson scored unassisted at 25:24 to trim the margin
to 9-2 at halftime.
After Schrum set up Paige Ibello at 37:41 to increase the Johns
Hopkins lead to 10-2, Mount St. Mary's scored four of the final
five goals on the evening.
"I was really proud of the way our girls played on the field,"
said LaMonica. "We knew that it would be a battle. Once we got the
kinks out, I thought that we created some good looks and had some
great plays."
Kearney recorded her second free-position goal at 44:33 before
Johnson converted an 8-meter shot of her own at 45:34 to make it a
six-goal contest. Kearney then completed her second hat trick of
the season unassisted at 48:15 to cut the margin to 10-5.
Duffey helped the Blue Jays answer with her fourth assist of the
day when she connected with Monica Fischer at 53:15.
Johnson scored the final tally of the game off an assist from
Jordan Certeza (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran), the current NEC
Rookie of the Week, with 3:20 on the clock to cut the margin to
11-6.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) tied a
season-high with 13 saves. Cosette Larash made three stops and
Lizzie O'Ferrall turned away one shot for Johns Hopkins.
Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) paced the defense with a
season-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers. Lucy Pompa
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) recorded three ground balls and two
caused turnovers while Esther Rufolo grabbed four draw
controls.
"Aly and Brigid both had a great performance today, especially
in the second half," said LaMonica.
With her three goals, Johnson has posted the eighth-most goals
in a single season with 42 in program history. In addition, the
senior moved into sixth place on the program's all-time career
points list (147). Rufolo moved into sixth place on the
single-season chart for draw controls (44).
Mount St. Mary's, who concludes its home slate 5-2, returns to
action and league play at Wagner on Friday. Game time is 4 p.m.
