FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart scored the final three goals,
including two tallies in overtime to down Mount St. Mary's 9-7 in
overtime in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse action on
Thursday.
Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) paced the Mount (4-6,
2-2 NEC) with two goals and an assist while Jordan Certeza
(Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) registered a marker and two
assists in the loss.
After Certeza gave the Mount a 7-6 lead at 44:24, the Pioneers
(7-4, 5-0 NEC) tied the game on a Cori Horelik free-position tally
at 49:01 and neither team found the twine in the final 10 minutes
and 59 seconds to force the extra session. Carrisa Hauser scored
the go-ahead goal unassisted at 61:22 before Farra Coppola sealed
the win with an unassisted tally at 65:04 for a 9-7 decision.
Horelik fueled Sacred Heart with a hat trick and Alisa Fuchs
scored twice while Coppola, Hauser, Alicia Fuchs, Kate Kmiotek and
Kaitlin Rochler each tallied a goal and an assist in the win.
The game was a seesaw battle with neither team taking more than
a two-goal margin.
Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) got the scoring started
with an unassisted goal at 5:22.
The Pioneers answered with back-to-back scores to grab a 2-1
edge. Fuchs scored 59 seconds after Pompa to tie the game off a
Coppola feed. Rochler gave Sacred Heart a 2-1 margin with an
unassisted tally at 6:17.
Alexis Salerno (South Setauket, N.Y./South Side) converted a
free-position chance at 6:54 to start a 3-0 run by Mount St. Mary's
to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 advantage. Johnson then found the
twine unassisted at 8:48 and off a Certeza helper at 11:43.
Horelik fueled a Sacred Heart 3-0 run with back-to-back goals.
She scored off a Kmiotek feed at 12:18 before Rochler set Horelik
up at 16:55. Fuchs found the twine off a Hauser assist at 24:34 to
give the Pioneers a 5-4 edge at halftime.
Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) tied
the game with an unassisted marker 56 seconds into the final
stanza.
Kmiotek regained the advantage for Sacred Heart unassisted at
31:23 before the Mountaineers answered with the next two scores.
Certeza set up Emily Kirby (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin), the
current NEC Player of the Week, at 36:44 to tie the game at 6.
Certeza then scored off a Johnson feeder at 44:24 to give Mount St.
Mary's a 7-6 edge.
The Pioneers then scored at 49:01 to tie the game and earned the
victory in overtime.
After Sacred Heart tied the game in regulation each team had one
chance to break the standstill. Horelik missed wide at 50:38 and
Kirby had her shot stopped by netminder Chelsea Wagner. In the
final 10 minutes and 59 seconds of regulation, the teams combined
for two shots and six turnovers.
In overtime, Salerno got the opening draw control to set up a
scoring chance for the Mount. Pompa had an 8-meter shot saved by
Wagner at 60:51 before Hauser scored the decisive tally at 61:22.
The Pioneers got the ensuing draw control, but turned the ball
over. Rufolo missed wide at 62:55 and Johnson had her shot stopped
by Wagner at 62:59.
Kmiotek got the draw control in the second half of overtime, but
Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South
Carroll) forced a turnover with 1:30 left. The Mount turned the
ball over seven seconds later and Coppola scored at 65:04 for a 9-7
lead and then grabbed the ensuing draw control to seal the
victory.
McTavish had seven saves for the Mountaineers and Wagner turned
away 11 shots for Sacred Heart.
Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) paced the Mount St. Mary's
defense with three caused turnovers, a ground ball and a caused
turnover. Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough), the current
NEC co-Defensive Player of the Week added two ground balls, two
draw controls and two caused turnovers while Cait Fraccalvieri (Bay
Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) scooped up a career-high four ground
balls.
With her three points, Johnson moved into ninth place on the
program's all-time career points list with 133. Pompa moved into
eighth place in career draw controls with 78 draws.
It was the Mount's second overtime game this season after
defeating George Washington 15-14 in double overtime on Mar. 10.
The Mountaineers are 4-4 in overtime all-time.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Quinnipiac.
