Longwood Rallies Past Women's Lacrosse, 11-10

EMMITSBURG, Md. - Longwood scored with 59 seconds left to come-from-behind to defeat Mount St. Mary's 11-10 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday.

Jordan Certeza (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) paced the Mount (2-4) with four goals and two assists while Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) added three goals and two assists.

"It was unfortunately a disappointing game for us today, but we saw some good things from the team today," said head coach Sonia LaMonica.

Johnson gave Mount St. Mary's a 10-8 lead with 14:21 remaining, but the Lancers scored the final three goals to earn the victory. Cara O'Brien, who had four goals in the game, scored unassisted at 46:52 to start the comeback. Kelsey Dean tied the game at 10 with an unassisted tally at 52:57 before Karli Brentlinger handed Longwood the lead with 59 seconds left.

Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) got the ensuing draw control, but a turnover gave the ball to the Lancers. Longwood gave the ball right back to the Mount to give the squad a chance to square the game. The Mountaineers called timeout with 35 seconds left and could not get a shot off when the buzzer sounded.

O'Brien fueled Longwood with four tallies and an assist while Karli Brentlinger registered three goals and an assist in the winning effort.

The first half was a seesaw battle until Mount St. Mary's took a 6-5 lead into halftime and the Mount held onto the advantage until the Lancers scored three unanswered goals to end the game.

The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard first when Certeza scored off an Emily Kirby (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) at 2:28.

Longwood answered with two goals to take a 2-1 edge. O'Brien scored unassisted at 3:43 before she found the twice off a Duan Wright feed at 4:22.

Mount St. Mary's scored the next two tallies to reclaim the lead. Certeza returned the favor to Kirby at 6:46 before Johnson found the twine for the first time on the afternoon off a Meaghan Conlon (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) helper 8:05 for a 3-2 margin. With the tally, Johnson became the eighth player in program history to reach 100 goals in her career.

O'Brien answered for the Lancers on an 8-meter goal at 11:35 to tie the game at 3 before Johnson found the twine unassisted at 14:39 to give the Mount a 4-3 advantage.

After Karli Brentlinger scored off a Page Farmer assist at 16:30, Dean registered a free-position tally to hand the Lancers a 5-4 lead with 6:12 left in the half.

The Mountaineers scored the final two goals of the half to take a 6-5 margin into the break. Johnson set up Esther Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) at 56:12 to tie the game at 5 before Certeza scored unassisted with 1:37 on the clock to give Mount St. Mary's the lead at halftime.

"Jordan Certeza had a great game today," said LaMonica. "She stepped up to be a leader on the field and that is a great sign of things to come."

Certeza then gave the Mount a two-goal advantage when to took a pass from Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) 45 seconds into the final frame.

Karli Brentlinger answered for Longwood unassisted at 31:36, but Kirby connected two Certeza for the second time on the afternoon at 32:03 to hand the Mountaineers an 8-6 advantage.

The two teams then traded goals twice to help the Mount maintain a two-goal lead. Amanda Bereznay scored off a Karli Brentlinger pass at 32:22 before Kirby converted an 8-meter shot at 33:24.

O'Brien set up Jamie Brentlinger at 44:21, but Certeza dished out an assist to Johnson at 45:39 to give Mount St. Mary's a 10-8 edge.

"Ashley Johnson has been a great leader for us." Said LaMonica. "She has definitely started to come out of her shell and embrace that role. She is showing great composure and directing our offense which is what we need."

O'Brien then started a 3-0 run for Longwood to lead them to the victory.

Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made 12 saves for the Mountaineers. Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers while Kearney had three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Pompa stuffed the stat sheet with a goal, an assist, four draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

With her three-goal performance, Johnson ties Erin LaMotte (102, 2002-05) for seventh place on the program's all-time career goal list. Pompa cracked the Top-10 in draw controls with 68.

The Mount honored former women's lacrosse standout Jen Stocker Buckles at haltime. The program's all-time leader in goals and assist will become the first women's lacrosse player inducted into the Mount St. Mary's Hall of Fame tonight.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday to open up Northeast Conference play at Monmouth. Game time is 3 p.m.
