WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West)
capped off a career-high seven-goal performance by scoring the
game-winning goal with six seconds left in the second overtime to
lift Mount St. Mary's past George Washington 15-14 in
non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.
After a Colonials' (2-4) foul in the box with six seconds left
in the second overtime, Johnson buried the decisive goal into the
netting to hand the Mount (2-3) the win. The senior notched a
career-high seven tallies in the contest, including a natural hat
trick in the second half to start a 6-0 run by the Mountaineers to
tie the game at 13 with 40 seconds left in regulation and force the
extra session.
Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) added her first
collegiate hat trick along with an assist while Jordan Certeza
(Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) tallied two goals and three
assists in the winning effort.
Sarah Phillips powered George Washington with five goals and
three assists. Kristina Beese added three goals and two assists in
the loss.
Despite trailing for most the match, Mount St. Mary's scored the
final six goals of regulation to even the game at 13-all to force
the extra session before Johnson scored the game-winner with six
seconds on the clock in the second overtime period.
The senior started the big comeback with three-straight goals in
a span of four minutes and seven seconds. Johnson scored unassisted
at 48:14, off a Certeza assist at 51:35 and on a free-position shot
at 52:21 to cut the margin to 13-10.
Mount St. Mary's then scored three goals in the final 1:59 of
regulation. After Kearney converted an 8-meter shot at 1:59,
Certeza scored unassisted 26 seconds later and Kearney found the
twine for the third time on the afternoon with 40 ticks remaining
to send the game into overtime.
Beese scored off a Phillips helper at 3:10 in overtime to give
the Colonials a 14-13 edge, but Certeza scored unassisted with 1:39
left in the first extra session to knot the game at 14 to force a
second overtime period and set up Johnson's game-winning
heroics.
After Certeza scored the game-tying goal Taylor Donohue grabbed
the draw control and George Washington had the ball for 1:34, but
could not get a shot off in that span to send the game to a second
overtime.
Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) got the draw control to
open the second overtime session. The Mount held onto the ball
until a foul in the box was called with six second left and Johnson
buried the shot to give the Mountaineers the come-from-behind
victory.
The game did not look like it was destined to come down to the
wire from the start of the day. The Colonials had control of the
game until the Mountaineers 6-0 run to end regulation.
Phillips got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at 1:22
before Johnson tied the match 45 seconds later on her first tally
of the afternoon.
The Colonials then scored two-straight goals to grab a 3-1 edge.
Phillips set up Megan Seidman at 2:41 and Hilary Quinn scored
unassisted at 9:07 to give George Washington a two-goal margin.

at 9:35, but Phillips scored unassisted at 10:40 and 13:07 to give
the Colonials a 5-2 advantage.
Mount St. Mary's made a one-goal game after back-to-back goals.
Johnson scored off a feeder from Kearney at 15:57 before Kearney
found the twine unassisted at 15:57 to trim the deficit to 5-4.
George Washington closed the half by scoring four of the final
five tallies to go into halftime with a 9-5 lead. Audrey Joy and
Seidman started the run with unassisted markers at 17:52 and 18:23,
respectively.
After Natalie Loutchaninoff (Kingwood, Texas/Northeast Christian
Academy) scored off a Certeza assist at 25:05, the Colonials scored
the final two goals of the stanza. Phillips notched her fourth goal
of the afternoon unassisted at 27:04 before Donohue scored off a
Beese helper with 56 seconds left for a four-goal advantage at the
break.
The Mount scored the first goal of the final frame when Emily
Kirby (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) set up Pompa at 32:38 to trim
the deficit to 9-6. Phillips answered for the Colonials unassisted
at 37:55 before Kirby took a feeder from Certeza at 38:33 to cut
the margin to three goals.
Phillips responded again for George Washington and started a 3-0
run when she found Beese at 41:44. Quinn then scored unassisted at
44:48 before Beese found the twine at 46:11.
Johnson halted the run with a natural hat trick and started the
Mount's comeback to the win.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made seven saves
for the Mountaineers. Pompa and Esther Rufolo (Woodstock,
Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) each grabbed six draw controls
for the Mount.
Johnson scored the most goals in a game since Katelyn Catanese
posted six goals against Fairfield on Mar. 14, 2009 and became the
first player since Catanese to notch a natural hat trick in a game.
Catanese notched a natural hat trick against Wagner on Apr. 11,
2009. The seven tallies is also one away from the program record
for goals in a game.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at home against
Longwood. Game time is 1 p.m.
