DENVER, Colo. - Denver defeated Mount St. Mary's 18-2 in
non-conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday.
Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) and Jackie Kearney
(Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) each scored for the Mount (1-2) while
Emily Kirby (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) dished out an assist in
the loss. Johnson played a contest in her home state for the first
time in her career.
Lauren Ciccomascolo paced the Pioneers with three goals and four
assists. Lexi Sanders added one goal and six assists while Ali
Flury and Bonnie Wells each found the twine four times in the
winning effort.
Denver scored the first three goals and seven of the first nine
tallies to take the lead and never look back to earn its
third-straight win against the Mountaineers. The Mount played in
Colorado for the second time in program history and the first since
2002.
Wells gave the Pioneers the lead on a natural hat trick in the
first seven minutes and 15 seconds. Wells scored off a
Cioccomascolo assist at 1:48, a Sanders helper at 7:05 and 10
seconds later off a feeder from Alex Befus for a 3-0 lead.
Johnson got Mount St. Mary's on the scoreboard off a Kirby
assist at 9:03. After Ciccomascolo scored unassisted at 10:54,
Kearney converted a free-position opportunity at 13:22 to trim the
deficit to 4-2.
Denver then closed the first half with three unanswered tallies
to take a 7-2 advantage going into halftime. Flury scored off a
Ciccomascolo assist at 24:27 before Ciccomascolo converted 8-meter
shots at 25:57 and 26:56 for a five-goal advantage.
The Pioneers then scored 11 times in the second half to earn the
18-2 victory. Flury scored three times while Sanders posted one
tally and five assists in the stanza. Kristy Faulder and Kaiti
Delaney also each found the twine twice in the 11-goal second
half.
Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made 13 saves
for the Mount while Ashley Harman had five stops and Katie Gold
turned away two shots for Denver.
Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) led the defense with three draw
controls, one ground ball and one caused turnover. Esther Rufolo
(Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) added three draw
controls while Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) posted two
draw controls and a caused turnover for the Mountaineers.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday against Holy
Cross in Denver. Match time is 12 p.m.
