Women's Soccer Clipped by George Washington, 1-0

Emmitsburg, Md. (August 30, 2009)--Mount St. Mary's was clipped by George Washington, 1-0, in women's soccer action at Waldron Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Senior forward Emily Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) paced the Mount with six shots in the game.

The Colonials scored on a free kick 23:42 into the game and were able to make the goal stand in the victory. George Washington's Misa Eiritz took the free kick to the right on the penalty box and hit the ball low on the ground. The kick went through traffic in front of the net and slipped past Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) into the lower-left hand corner for the only score of the game.

The Mount had a couple of good scoring chances in the second half, but was unable to come up with the tying goal. Menotti had a shot from 20 yards out tipped over the crossbar by George Washington Lindsey Rowe. With just under 11 minutes left, the Mount was awarded a free kick just outside the top of the penalty box. Sadie Winship (York, Pa./Eastern York) took the free kick, but her shot saild just over the cross bar.

Loyola's best scoring chance in the second half came when Jillian Morgan took a nice pass in the box and back-heeled a kick that struck the crossbar.

The Mount held an 11-to-9 advantage in shots in the game, including an 8-to-5 margin in the second half. Rowe made six saves in the win for George Washington while the Mount's Miller had five saves in the contest.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, September 4, with a 7:00 p.m. game at Saint Joseph's.
