EMMITSBURG,
Md. Jake Willertz (Severna Park, Md./Mount St. Joesph) and
Cody Lehrer (Baltimore, Md./Dulaney) combined for five goals to help Mount
St. Mary's earn a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
Tournament after the Mount defeated Wagner 13-3 in men's lacrosse
action on Saturday.
UPDATE:
The other pieces fell for Mount St. Mary's on Saturday to help the
Mount become the No. 2 seed in the MAAC Tournament. Siena defeated
Providence 8-5 in the afternoon and then Manhattan held on to down
Marist 10-9 on Saturday night. The Mountaineers, Providence and
Manhattan finished in a three-way tie for second place with a 5-3
conference record, but Mount St. Mary's holds the tiebreaker with
both teams after defeating the Friars 7-5 on Apr. 11 and knocking
off the Jaspers 12-9 on Mar. 14 to earn the No. 2 seed. The
Mountaineers will face third-seed Manhattan on May 1 in Buffalo,
N.Y. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
Willertz
notched his first collegiate hat trick while Lehrer registered two
goals and an assist to propel the Mount (5-8, 5-3 MAAC) to its
first MAAC Tournament appearance since 2006. The freshmen duo
scored three of the Mountaineers' first five goals to help Mount
St. Mary's jump out to a 5-1 advantage after one period.
Eric
Ososki (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) added a goal and an
assist, and Doug Friedman (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./Northern Highlands)
dished out two assists while seniors Brendan Flanagan (Garden City,
N.J./Garden City) and Shaun Moran (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Kellenburg
Memorial) celebrated Senior Day by each finding the twine in the
winning effort.
Evan
Shull, Brian Poissant and Gref Trenti each scored for the Seahawks
(1-15, 0-8 MAAC) while local product Brandon Waszak, who played at
Linganore High School, made his 2009 debut with nine saves in the
second half.
Knowing
that a win against Wagner would clinch a playoff spot, the Mount
opened the game with a 5-1 first quarter and never looked back to
punch its ticket to Buffalo for the MAAC Tournament.
Willertz
got the scoring started when he scored off a Lehrer feed at 8:41 in
the first quarter. Ben Trapp (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) increased the
advantage to 2-0 when he found the twine unassisted 40 seconds
later.
Poissant
momentarily halted the Mountaineers' offensive attack with an
unassisted tally at 5:07, but Mount St. Mary's closed the first
quarter with three-straight goals to take a 5-1 margin. After
Lehrer notched his first marker of the afternoon unassisted at
4:28, Drew Dunn (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) scored his first goal
of the year at 2:12 before Ososki fed Lehrer with eight seconds
left in the stanza for a four-goal advantage.
Ososki
and Willertz increased the margin with unassisted tallies at 6:25
and 4:36, respectively, in the second quarter to give the Mount a
7-1 lead at halftime.
Willertz
then scored the first goal of the second half off a Sean Brogan
(St. Charles, Md./St. Charles East) assist at 10:18 before
Christian Kellett (Audubon, Pa./Malvern Prep) capped a string of
seven unanswered tallies with an unassisted goal at 7:34 for a 9-1
advantage in the third quarter.
After
Shull found the back of the net for Wagner at 3:58, the two
Mountaineers' seniors each scored the next two markers. Flanagan
ended the third quarter scoring off a Freidman assist at 3:22
before Freidman fed Moran at 11:05 in the fourth period. Mike
Schwab (Owings, Md./DeMatha) gave Mount St. Mary's a 12-2 lead when
he scored off a Brian Fitzgerald (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's
County) assist at 10:47.
Trenti
answered for Wagner with an unassisted goal at 10:38, but junior
Tim Henry (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) hooked up with freshman
Dan Molinari (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) for the freshman's
first career score at 3:04 in the fourth quarter to cap the
Mountaineers' victory.
T.C.
DiBartolo (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made six saves in the
first half while A.J. Schaufler (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernardsville)
and Allen Frere (St. Mary's City, Md./Great Mills) each played a
quarter and made three stops and two stops,
respectively.
