EMMITSBURG,
Md. Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) scored
six goals to lead Mount St. Mary's past Long Island 16-6 in the
Northeast Conference (NEC) women's lacrosse opener for both teams
on Friday.
Rossetti notched her third career six-goal performance on the
afternoon and second this season after also registering six tallies
against Longwood on Mar. 7. Rossetti scored four of the Mount's
first five goals in the first 16 minutes to help the Mountaineers
jump out to a 5-0 advantage before adding two markers and an assist
in the second half.
Emily
Kirby (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) added a career-high two goals
and two assists for Mount (1-8, 1-0 NEC) while Caitlin Preas
(Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel), Ashley Johnson (Arvada,
Colo./Arvada West) and Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) all
found the twine twice in the winning effort.
Annie
Kalata paced the Blackbirds (1-4, 0-1 NEC) with a hat trick, and
Claire Ranney chipped in two goals in the loss.
Rossetti
helped stake the Mount out to the early lead and the Mountaineers
never looked back to earn its first win of the season and improve
to 10-2 in NEC openers.
Rossetti
powered a 5-0 run in the first 15 minutes and seven seconds. The
senior scored unassisted 18 seconds into the match and again at
1:43. After Waraksa scored unassisted at 6:49, Rossetti took a feed
from Briana Gauthier (Severna Park, Md./St. Mary's) and found the
back of the net at 7:06 before the senior notched her fourth goal
in the first 16 minutes unassisted at 15:07 to give Mount St.
Mary's a five-goal margin.
Kalata
put Long Island on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally at
15:36, but Kirby answered for the Mountaineers when she fed Johnson
at 17:30 and then scored unassisted at 19:57.
After
Ranney scored unassisted for the Blackbirds at 20:31, Kirby helped
the Mount with the next two scores. Kirby fed Alexis Salerno (South
Setauket, N.Y./Ward Mellville) at 22:16 and then the junior scored
off a Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) helper at
23:43 to give Mount St. Mary's a 9-2 advantage.
Ranney
notched her second tally of the afternoon at 26:29 to go into
halftime trailing, 9-3.
The Mount
came out of the intermission and scored the first four goals of the
stanza. Johnson started the scoring unassisted at 31:17 before the
senior class took over for the next three tallies. Preas scored
consecutive goals off helpers from Catanese at 31:56 and Rossetti
at 34:28 before Waraksa found the back of the net unassisted at
36:22 to give Mount St. Mary's a 13-3 lead.
Kalata
answered for Long Island at the 38 minute mark, but Rossetti
responded for the Mountaineers with an 8-meter goal at 41:09 and an
unassisted marker at 46:30 for a 15-4 margin.
The
Blackbirds rolled of the next two scores thanks to free position
goals by Christie Wienckowski (48:00) and Kalata (54:38). Esther
Rufolo (Woodstock, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) sealed the
16-6 win with an unassisted goal at 58:08.
Brigid
McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made seven saves in her
first collegiate win while Erin Kelly (Derwood, Md./Magruder) made
five stops and Melanie Showers (Poolesville, Md./Academy of Holy
Cross) recorded one save. Jaqueline Simonian had 10 saves for Long
Island and Amber Meeks turned away three shots in the
loss.
Aly Jost
(Abington, Md./Bel Air) paced the defense with five ground balls,
two draw controls and a caused turnover. Along with her career-best
two goals, Preas had four ground balls, a draw control and a caused
turnover. Catanese had two assists, three ground balls, three draw
controls and a caused turnover.
The Mount
has won six-straight league openers after playing Long Island for
the first time in the inaugural NEC game of the year and played at
home for the fourth-consecutive season.
Mount St.
Mary's returns to action on Sunday at home against Saint Francis
(Pa.). Game time is 1 p.m.
