George Washington Rallies Past Women's Lacrosse, 14-5

EMMITSBURG, Md. – George Washington downed Mount St. Mary's 14-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Ashley Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvarda West) scored two goals for the Mount (0-6) in the loss.

Mia Breheny and Sarah Phillips each recorded a hat trick (1-6) for the Colonials while Katherine Sampson posted two goals and an assist, and Taylor Donohue added a marker and two assists in the winning effort.

George Washington scored eight-straight goals to erase the deficit and never look back to earn its sixth-straight win against the Mountaineers.

Trailing 3-0, the Colonials rolled off 10 of the next 11 goals to grab a 10-4 advantage. Breheny started the run with consecutive goals at 6:14 and at 11:55.

After Johnson scored unassisted at 16:29 to give Mount St. Mary's a 4-2 edge, George Washington closed the half with three unanswered tallies to grab a 5-4 margin at halftime. Donohue hooked up with Allie Monticollo at 22:44 before Kristina Beese connected with Breheny for her third goal of the afternoon at 26:14 and tie the match at 4. Donohue then handed the Colonials the lead for good when she took a pass from Sampson with 1:16 left in the first half.

The Colonials continued their offensive outburst in the second half by starting the period with six unanswered goals. Hilary Quinn (33:15) and Katelyn Langs (39:27) started the scoring in the surge to start the second half before Sampson posted consecutive tallies at 40:48 and 48:28. Sarah Phillips capped the run with her first collegiate goal at 49:11 for an 11-4 lead.

Aly Jost (Abington, Md./Bel Air) momentarily halted the Colonials surge with her first collegiate marker at 40:01.

George Washington closed the match with the final four goals by Kristin Mobyed (53:37), Langs (54:46) and Phillips registered two goals to end the contest at 55:31 and 59:42.

Mount St. Mary's opened the game with the first three goals to take a 3-0 advantage. Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) started the scoring on an 8-meter tally at 2:08. Johnson notched her first goal of the afternoon off a Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) helper 29 seconds later before Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) capped the run unassisted at 4:35. George Washington then went on a 10-1 run to earn its first win of the year.

Brigid McTavish (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) made 15 saves for Mount St. Mary's while Liz Hoffman made eight saves in relief for the Colonials to pick up the victory.

Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) paced the defense with three ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control while Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) grabbed four draws for the Mount.

Johnson moved into 13th place on the program's all-time goal list with 63 goals while Rossetti moves into the Top-20 in goals with 54. Waraksa moved into fifth place in assists with 52 and Kearney moved into ninth place in draw controls with 67.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Fairfield. Game time is 12 p.m.
