Emmitsburg, Md. (September 2, 2008)--Kelly
Brashear scored twice to lead American to a 3-0 victory over Mount
St. Mary's in women's soccer action at Waldron Family Stadium on
campus on Tuesday afternoon. The Mount's freshman goalkeeper
Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) made eight
saves in the loss.
Brashear opened the scoring 17:22 into the game when she ran down a
long pass from Tatiana Bertolo and chipped the ball past Miller for
a 1-0 advantage. The Eagles (2-2) carried play throughout the
half, outshooting the Mount (0-3) 9-0 in the opening stanza.
The game remained tight until Brashear scored again, this time off
a corner kick, to give American a 2-0 advantage. Brashear
corralled Marissa Crolett's corner kick in box, turned and fired a
shot into the top right corner of the net for her second score of
the game. The Eagles rounded out the scoring with 25 seconds left
when Krystn Hodge fired a shot from 18 yards out to beat Miller.
Mary Riegler made the play, pushing the ball down the field on a
breakaway before feeding Hodge for the score.
The Mount's best scoring chance came with just under 22 minutes
left when Meghan Haspert (Woodbine,
Md./Glenelg) fired a shot low and to the left that
American goalkeeper Arianna Efstathiou was able to smother.
American held a 23-to-3 advantage in shots in the game. Miller
made eight saves for the Mount, the third straight game she has
reached that figure. Efstathiou made a pair of save to post the
shutout for American.
The Mount returns to action on Friday,
September 5th, with a 5:30 p.m. game against Radford at the
Marshall Thundering Herd Nike Invitational. The Mount will face
The Citadel at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, in the second day of
the tournament.
