Towson, Md. (August 24, 2008)--Towson defeated
Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in the Mount's season opener on Sunday
afternoon at the Towson Center Field. Senior Erin Canning
(Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored the Mount's goal in
the game.
Towson snapped a scoreless tie when Courtney Hamsher beat Mount
keeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) with
4:47 left in the first half. Towson crossed the ball to the
middle, where Hamsher deflected the ball into the net for the
score.
The Tigers (1-1) made it 2-0 just 1:07 into the second half when
Kaitlyn Zamroz buried a one-timer off a Christa DeBole cross. The
Mount answered quickly, however, when Canning drilled a shot from
25 yards out just 2:46 after Zamroz's goal. The Mount, however,
was unable to get the equalizer as the Tigers held on for the
victory.
Towson outshot the Mount 26-to-7 in the game, including a 12-to-2
advantage in the first half. Miller made eight saves in her
collegiate debut for Mount St. Mary's, including five in the first
half to keep her team in the game. Kendie Bauer made two saves to
earn the victory for the Tigers.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday, August 30, when Marshall
