Catanese Notches Natural Hat Trick, Career-High Six Goals In 16-7 Win At St. Mary's (Calif.)

MOREGA, Calif. - Katelyn Catanese (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) notched a career-high seven points to lead Mount St. Mary's past St. Mary's (Calif.) 16-7 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Friday.

Catanese, who leads the team with 15 goals and two assists for 17 points, recorded six markers and an assist for seven points including a natural hat trick in the first two minutes and 58 seconds of the game.

Rebecca Douglass (White Hall, Md./Towson Catholic) recorded a tally and three helpers for the Mount (2-2) while Emily Kirby (Towson, Md./Franklin) (two goals), Ashley Johnson (Avada, Colo./Arvada West) (two goals), Jackie Kearney (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) (a goal and an assist) and Kathleen Rossetti (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) (two assists) each registered two points in the Mountaineers second-straight victory.

P.J. Hainley paced the Gaels (0-1) with two tallies and an assist while Dana Elfvin found the twine twice in the losing effort.

Sparked by a natural hat trick by Catanese, Mount St. Mary's scored the first four goals of the game and never look back to wrap up its California trip 2-0 and earn its first win against St. Mary's (Calif.) in four tries.

Catanese jumped started the Mount offense with her first goal of the afternoon at 1:14 before she found the twine off a Kearney connection 65 seconds later. The junior then completed the natural hat trick off a Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven) helper 2:58 into the match. Johnson increased the Mountaineers advantage to 4-0 when she scored off a Rossetti helper at 4:15.

The Gaels got on the scoreboard in their season opener at 5:04 when Hainley found Lisa Vogeley.

Mount St. Mary's answered right back for two goals to grab a 6-1 margin. Douglass found the back of the net unassisted at 7:11 before she assisted on Catanese's fourth marker 14 seconds later.

St. Mary's (Calif.) scored two of the next three goals to trim the deficit to 7-3. Sonja Kapusta scored at 8:21 before Kearney notched her first collegiate tally at 10:26. Alana Burrough responded to Kearney's score with one of her own at 10:49.

Mount St. Mary's then had two players register their first goals of the season to increase the advantage to 9-3. Kirby scored at 12:19 before Caitlin Preas (Rockville, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) found the twine for the sixth time in her career at 14:24.

After Elfvin scored for the Gaels at 17:44, Johnson ended the first half scoring with her second goal of the day off a Rossetti assist at the 24:47 mark and a 10-4 lead going into the intermission.

The Mountaineers started the second half the way they begin the game with four unanswered goals. Douglass set up Kelly Taylor (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) at 31:42 before Catanese (39:22), Kirby (41:30) and Lucy Pompa (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) (42:17) each scored unassisted for a 10-goal advantage.

Elfvin momentarily halted the Mount St. Mary's surge at 48:04, but Catanese set up Mary Kate Lavin's (Ellicott City, Md./Maryvale) at 48:55 and Douglass hooked up with Catanese for her personal-best sixth tally at the 50:36 mark for a 16-6 advantage.

Hainley scored twice in the final six minutes, but the Mount came away with a 16-7 decision.

Jane Karger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) recorded seven saves while Melanie Showers (Poolesville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross) registered three saves and freshman Erin Kelly (Derwood, Md./Magruder) made her collegiate debut and notched one save in nine minutes and 15 seconds. Hilary Gardner had nine saves for St. Mary's (Calif.).

Freshman Aly Jost (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) paced the defense with four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Catanese moved into 14th place on the program's all-time point list with 92 points. She has found the twine in 22-straight games and has registered 14 multi-goal performances, including four matches with five or more markers.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action when the squad makes its Emmitsburg debut against Longwood on Mar. 8. Game time is 3 p.m.
