BALTIMORE, Md. Eleventh-ranked Johns Hopkins defeated
Mount St. Mary's 18-5 in non-conference women's lacrosse action on
Tuesday.
Katelyn Catanese (Hungtinton, N.Y./St. Anthony's) tied a
career-high with two goals for the Mount (0-2) while Rebecca
Douglass (Towson, Md./Towson Catholic), Katie Falatach (Annapolis,
Md./St. Mary's) and A.J. Johnson (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West) also
found the twine in the loss.
Mary Key paced the Blue Jays (3-1) with five goals and three
assists while Brett Bathras and Lauren Schwarzmann each tallied two
goals and two assists in the winning effort.
The Blue Jays opened the match with six unanswered goals and never
looked back for its sixth-straight win against the
Mountaineers.
Johns Hopkins strung together six-straight goals as part of an 11-2
first half. Schwarzmann started the run by assisting Key at the one
minute mark before she found the twine herself at 2:09. Walsh
scored 31 seconds later and then set up Alex Nolan at the 3:09
mark. Bathras found the twine at 8:33 and then Scwarzmann set up
Key for the second time on the afternoon 10 seconds later.
Catanese put Mount St. Mary's on the scoreboard at 12:39, but then
the Blue Jays rolled off five-straight markers to grab an 11-1
margin.
After Key hooked up with Bathras at 12:51, Steph Janice connected
with Kadie Stamper at the 17:14 mark. Key returned the favor to
Swarzmann, Bathras assisted Sam Schrum and Stampler scored
unassisted to cap the string of unanswered goal at 26:19.
Johnson scored off a Breana Waraksa (Media, Pa./Strath Haven)
helper with 1:44 left in the first half to make the score 11-2.
In the second half, Janice scored two-straight goals and Jenny
Higgins scored off a Key assist to hand Johns Hopkins a 14-2 edge
at the 34:16 mark.
Mount St. Mary's then rolled off three-straight markers to trim the
margin to 14-5 at 42:02. Douglass started the surge with an
unassisted goal before Casey Paris (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley)
found Catanese for her second marker of the afternoon. Falatach
found the twine to cap the run off a Kathleen Rossetti (Havre de
Grace, Md./Perry Hall) helper.
The Blue Jays scored the final four goals, including two from Key
to defeat the Mountaineers for the fourth time at Homewood
Field.
Amelia Harris and Lizzie O'Farrell each made one save for Johns
Hopkins while Jane Karger (Pittsburgh, Pa./Hampton) made 12 saves
for Mount St. Mary's.
Senior Jacqui Ricca (Poolesville, Md./St. Johns College) posted
four caused turnovers and three ground balls while Rossetti added
four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
The Mount continues its five-game road trip at Virginia Tech on
Friday. Game time is 4 p.m.
