Mountaineers Make a Pitch for Six, Face Merrimack

EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 29, 2025) – Over the past three weeks, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball has gone from a 1-3 start to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play to 6-3 and in the upper echelon of the league standings. The team goes for six in a row, welcoming Merrimack to Knott Arena.
 
The contest is the only regular season meeting between the Mountaineers and Warriors, as Merrimack is one of the four teams the Mount will only face once based on the league's new scheduling rotation.  
 
MOUNT UPDATES & NOTES
  • Last week, the Mount defeated Siena 92-57 at Knott Arena and overcame Manhattan 80-66 in New York City.
  • Jo Raflo was the recipient of the MAAC Player of the Week this past Monday. She averaged 20 points between the two games, including a 26-point, 11 field goal effort in the victory over the Jaspers. The senior ranks sixth in the league for scoring (15.7) and eighth for three point percentage (.388). She also has now accrued 67 blocks as a Mountaineer, placing her on the program's top 10 list.
  • Anna LeMaster registered 11 three-pointers in the two games and continues to lead the MAAC in three pointers per game and three point percentage (.435). She now stands in the top 25 in the NCAA for both categories, including 10th for three-pointers per game.
  • Nyodie Guerard reached double figures for the first time as a collegiate player with 11 points in the Manhattan win. Jaedyn Jamison tied a career high for points against Siena and set one for blocks with a trio against the Jaspers.
  • Antoine White recorded his 50th win at the helm of the Mountaineers last Saturday. The victory was also the 825th in the program's history.
  • The Mountaineers are tied for third place in the MAAC, along with Marist and Siena. Fairfield remains undefeated and is first in the league, with Quinnipiac second.
 
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
  • The Warriors hold a 4-5 record in the MAAC and are looking to snap out of a funk where they have dropped four games out of five.
  • Thalia Sheppard leads Merrimack in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game.
  • Madison Roman is arguably the best all-around player for the Warriors, leading in rebounds per game with 8.3 and assists with 2.6 per game. The sophomore from Fairfield, Connecticut in third on the team for scoring.
  • Starter Paloma Garcia and reserve Lydia Melaschenko are the most dangerous for downtown, averaging over 40 percent on three-point attempts. Sheppard and freshman Mia Fiore also have more than 10 triples this year.
LAST TIME OUT
 
For three seasons, Mount St. Mary's and Merrimack battled in Northeast Conference competition. The Mountaineers have won five games out of six, including sweeps during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. The Warriors' lone win came in the first-ever meeting between the sides, a 2020 contest in North Andover.
