EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 2, 2025) – With only Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play the rest of the way, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball hopes to start January on a positive note when they travel to Upstate New York to play Niagara.

MOUNT UPDATE

Playing their final non-conference tune-up of the 2024-25 campaign, Mount St. Mary's posted its highest scoring regulation output but fell to a hot shooting Morgan State Bears team, 72-68. Anna LeMaster led in points for the Mountaineers with 18, followed by Gabrielle Kennerly with 15 and Jo Raflo with 13.

LeMaster now stands atop the MAAC leaderboard for three-pointers per game at 2.5 a contest and is now ninth in the league for points per game. Kennerly also ranks in the top 10 for three-point shooting, as does Giana Hoddinott for assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Mount is looking to avoid a 0-3 MAAC start for the second season in a row. They started the 2023-24 season 0-4 before defeating Quinnipiac.

SCOUTING NIAGARA

Injuries and roster issues have trouble the Purple Eagles all season, hampering the team to a 1-9 start. That included four straight losses where high-level competition posted 100 points or more to open the season. Sophomore Safiatu Kolliegbo makes an impact by leading Niagara in scoring at 12.9 points per game, as well as assists and steals. Marlie Dickerson averages double figures, and Talia Dial leads in three-pointers made. As a team, the Purple Eagles remain a threat to force steals, ranking 11th nationwide utilizing a high-octane, pressurizing defense.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES

Niagara has the upper hand in the series, winning six of the seven meetings, and all four MAAC meetings. Last season, the Purple Eagles overcame a 35-18 halftime deficit with 54 second half points to win 72-61 at the Gallagher Center, and then won 80-63 in Emmitsburg.

LOOKING AHEAD

Returning home from their three-game road swing, Mount St. Mary's battles Manhattan on Thursday, January 9. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. from Knott Arena.
