EMMITSBURG, Md. (August 13, 2024) – Capping off the 2023 campaign with a semifinals appearance at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, Mount St. Mary's women's soccer looks to build on that success in 2024. Their first step is the season opener – a contest with the Hampton Pirates Thursday.
To achieve their goals, head coach
Melissa Sherwood recharged the roster with 16 newcomers, almost evenly split between transfers and freshmen.
Among the transfer class, five come from Division I institutions.
Jasmine Sims played for Rider,
Gabrielle Olibris for Delaware State,
Lillian Young for Jacksonville,
Sydoney Clarke for Arkansas State, and Anika Sproxtron from Southeast Missouri State. The squad can also rely on
Sachi Negri, a goalkeeper transfer from Pitt-Johnstown, and
Ines Gama Ferreira, a field player from Union College in Tennessee.
First-year options are goalkeepers
Adelaide Paredes from Newark, New Jersey and
Anna Joyce from Niskayuna, New York; defender
Molly Gannon from Byram Township, New Jersey; midfielders
Joelle Hamel from McLean, Virginia,
Caoume Valle from Sterling, Virginia,
Peyton Gallagher from Toms River, New Jersey, and
Hannah Geiser of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and forwards
Ava Broadbent of Silver Spring, Maryland, and
Michaela West of Beltsville, Maryland.
THE 2023 SEASON
Making it further than any other Mount team in history, last year's squad advanced in the MAAC Championship following a triumphant home quarterfinal, moving past Niagara on penalties.
Klil Keshwar was instrumental in goalkeeping during most of the season, with fellow goalie
Arden Lembryk coming up big in the penalty shootout. Nine different Mountaineers posted a goal, with
Luisangely Navas,
Erin Antone, and
Madison Bee each scoring twice.
ABOUT HAMPTON
The Pirates come to Emmitsburg seeking their first win as a program since a 1-0 victory over South Carolina State on September 13, 2022. Looking to overcome their winless 2023, Hampton turns to Scot Vorwold, who amassed 95 wins as the coach for Harris-Stowe State University from 2014-2023. Both of their multi-goal scorers in Sanaa Perry and Patricia Wharton are back for the Pirates to kick off 2024.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Mount St. Mary's has won all four meetings over Hampton, with the most recent contest being a 2-1 final on September 1 of last year. The Mount has also defeated the Pirates in 2016, 2017, and 2022.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's begins the road campaign on Sunday, August 18 at Delaware State. They will return home August 25 against NJIT.
