EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 15, 2025) – Redshirt freshman
Abigail Makela rose to the challenge once again, eclipsing double digit saves for the first time as a collegiate player. Mount St. Mary's women's soccer was unable to match the one goal scored by Canisius in a 1-0 defeat Wednesday in Buffalo.
Canisius fired 21 shots toward the Mount goal during the match, with 13 landing on target. Makela turned away 12 of them—six in each half—including a crucial penalty save that kept the match level at the time. The Golden Griffins finally broke through in the 66th minute, when Azaria Fagan scored off an assist from Mia Iacona.
Makela, who has started every game for the Mount this season, has now collected 83 saves on the year. Her 12 saves against Canisius mark a new career high.
Offensively, the Mount managed eight shots, two of which were on goal.
Lillian Young and
Ines Gama Ferreira each recorded a shot on target.
Mount St. Mary's now holds a 3-11-1 record overall, including a 1-8-1 mark in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The Mount will close out its home schedule on Saturday, hosting Siena in a noon match. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to kickoff.
