Javelinists, Pole Vaulters, and 16 Qualifications Make Up Mount’s First Day at MAAC’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. (May 4, 2024) – Victories in the javelin and pole vault events headlined the scoring for Mount St. Mary's on the first day of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Along with the women's team ranking second and the men third, 16 times qualified to advance onto Sunday's finals.
 
Justin Sluijter and Lorelai Paxton paced the javelin group, with Sluijter earning a 59.61 meter throw to win the men's competition and Paxton's 40.43 meter effort led the women. The duo led a trio of point scorers on either side. Jeffrey Stupski took fifth at 43.59 meters and Andrew Lamanna earned seventh at 42.03 meters to add another six combined points. Rebecca Weir and her 38.68 meter throw along with Tierney McCarroll placing sixth at 36.70 meters contributed eight points.
 
In the pole vault, Arran Fahey and Emelie Beckman shined again. Fahey finished with a distance of 4.90 meters while Beckman tallied a season best 3.70 meters. Julia Kirschnick, Ella Dougher, and Jacey Hentz also scored for the women's team, accounting for 21 points of the team total when factoring Beckman in. Kirschnick finished fourth (3.40m), followed by Dougher in fifth (3.25m) and Hentz seventh (3.10m).
 
Further point scorers for the Mount included Emma Aller Espina (sixth, long jump, 5.44m); Jacelyn Chevannes and Keighan DeCoff throwing seventh and eighth in the hammer throw while being matched on the men's side with Jackson Huddleson and Renaldi Falwell; and Diego Miguelena in the steeplechase with a time of 9:21.86.
 
On top of the point scorers, the Mountaineer earned 16 qualifications for the next day's finals. The list encompasses Todd Charles, Nesrine Charouel, and Miles Moore (100m); Julia Kirschnick (100h); Will Stephenson and Joseph Poleate (110h), Bah Abdoulaye, Charouel and Moore (200m); Jahari Miller, Zaria Wilson, and Avery Ferron (400m); Stephenson and Poleate (400h); and Maeve Parrish (800m).
 
Mount St. Mary's women have 45 points in a tightly contested race, trailing Rider by eight. The men's team have 34 points, trialing leader Manhattan and second place Rider.
 
Events begin at 10 a.m. Sunday in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
