EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 9, 2024) – Two teams looking to finish their seasons on high notes meet in Buffalo as Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse squares off with the Canisius Golden Griffins.

MOUNT UPDATE

Not all hope is lost for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) playoffs, but the Mountaineers have their work cut out for them if a spot is to be secured. The team sits one game back of VMI and Marist for the sixth and final qualifier but would lose out on tiebreakers based on head-to-heads.

Last Saturday, the team saw Marist comeback on them in the fourth quarter to steal the game by an 11-10 score. Brody Atkinson supplied his fourth consecutive hat trick to continue his splendid rookie season, and Cormac Giblin notched his 20th goal of the year. Another tough pill to swallow is the result dropped the Mount to 1-3 in one-goal games.

The duo of Mitchell Dunham and Jackson Phillips continue to impress on the defensive end. Dunham ranks third in the MAAC with 26 caused turnovers and fifth for ground balls with 57. Phillips earned his 20th caused turnover during the Marist game and ranks eighth in the league.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS

Also starting league play at 1-5, Canisius finds itself in a similar predicament in terms of qualifying for the MAAC playoffs. Following a 13-12 win over Siena the Golden Griffins dropped games to VMI and LIU. They also fell to Marist earlier in the year, meaning they also would lose out on the tiebreaker scenario. Spreading out their offense, five Golden Griffins have 10-20 goals on the year with another two at nine for the year. Mason Wolford leads the team with 18 goals, Patrick Mitchell leads in ground balls at 26 along with 17 goals, and Alexis Simard has the most caused turnovers with 12.

ALL-TIME SERIES

Wednesday serves as the 22nd all-time meeting between the squads, and the Mount holds a 16-5 advantage. Jared McMahon and Kelly Gouin earned hat tricks for the Mountaineers in the 2023 contest to go with a 15-13 win. Canisius' best run in the series came from 2007-09 when they won three straight.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

MAAC leader Sacred Heart comes to Emmitsburg Saturday (Apr. 13) for a noon start. The contest serves as the penultimate game of the season.
