EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 5, 2024) – Taking the past two games, Mount St. Mary's women's lacrosse raises the stakes as they go for three in a row, welcoming the ranked Fairfield Stags to Emmitsburg.
The game marks the second time a team ranked in the Inside Lacrosse/IWLCA poll challenges the Mount at Waldron this season. #17 Navy played on campus last February 21, an 18-9 win for the Midshipmen. Prior to that, the most recent ranked team to travel to Emmitsburg was Towson in 2009.
MOUNT UPDATE
Coming off an outstanding showing on offense in the 16-15 win over Quinnipiac, the Mount relied on defense to get a win over Canisius. Trailing 3-2 entering the second quarter, they held the Golden Griffins to two goals the rest of the way, allowing for an 8-5 triumph.
Mackey Fick had four caused turnovers to spark the defense.
Anna Salerno and
Mackenzi Furlong were multi-goal scorers on offense.
Furlong has a sizable point advantage over Salerno 37-28, but Salerno is only two behind in the goal count.
Logan Cook scored her 10
th against the Griffins to become the fourth Mountaineers to reach double figures this season.
Hailey Chester is closing in on 50 draw controls for the year, and
Molly Molchanoff took the team lead for caused turnovers over
Madison Harmening following Wednesday's game.
SCOUTING THE STAGS
Fairfield is riding a 10-game winning streak into Emmitsburg. After falling to Holy Cross in the season opener, the Stags have been victorious in every game since February 14, going 6-1 in non-conference play with wins over UConn and Vermont, to name a couple. Against the MAAC the Stags claim a margin of victory of 9.75 goals per game. Elizabeth Talluto leads the offense with 41 goals and 53 points for the season. Lindey Barnes is the defensive catalyst with 20 caused turnovers and 37 ground balls, both team highs.
ALL-TIME SERIES
In addition to the challenge of facing a ranked team, the Mountaineers are looking for their first victory over Fairfield since 2006. The Stags hold a 5-3 lead in the all-time series.
