EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 10, 2024) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball begins its postseason Tuesday afternoon, taking on the Marist Red Foxes. The Mountaineers finished the season 10-10 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play, while the Red Foxes went 4-16.
MOUNT UPDATE
Defeating Saint Peter's this past Saturday, the Mount achieved double digit wins in conference play for the fourth time in five seasons.
Isabella Hunt tied her career high in points during the game, and
Jessica Tomasetti recorded her 1,000
th career point.
Offensive consistency has affirmed itself between 55 and 60 points the past several games. Defense also continued to be stout and limiting Saint Peter's to 46 points helped the team improve their national standing to 48
th in the country for scoring defense. They also stand 43
rd in three-point percentage defense and 66
th in field goal percentage defense.
Tomasetti leads the Mount in points per game, followed by
Jo Raflo who is also averaging double figures. Hunt has the highest number of rebounds with 226, good for 7.8 per contest, and the most assists with 72.
Jada Lee leads in steals at 58, and Raflo the highest number of blocks with 23.
SCOUTING MARIST
The Red Foxes come into the tournament with an overall record of 6-24. Faced with the challenging task of playing without two top players down the regular season stretch, they pieced together a win on Senior Night in Poughkeepsie, 49-48, against Manhattan.
Zaria Shazer leads in points and rebounds for Marist with a respective 14.1 and 8.4. Kiara Fisher averages over five assists with 17 games played. Lexie Tarul is the team's best three-pointer scorer and Morgan Lee earned the most rejections with 36.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
In 21 previous meetings, the Mountaineers hold a 16-5 record which was built primarily in the 1990s. Since joining forces in the MAAC, Marist took the first three contests before the Mount won last February 22. Tuesday marks the second time the two sides meet on a neutral site, with the first being the 1993 Northeast Conference Championship. Mount St. Mary's won that contest, 82-61, for their first Division I title.
