EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 21, 2024) – Looking to return to their recent winning ways, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball kicks off a two-stop New York road trip with a game against the Marist Red Foxes. The Mount hopes to forge a season split against the Poughkeepsie crew after falling to them in a home game last month.
MOUNT UPDATE
In a thrilling contest at Knott Arena this past Saturday, the Mount almost pulled off a monumental upset of the Fairfield Stags. Four Mountaineers posted double figures, led by
Jessica Tomasetti and
Jo Raflo, and the home side had a double digit second half lead. Fairfield – seeing their unblemished Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record in jeopardy – rallied by going 8-for-12 in the fourth quarter. Emina Selimovic connected on the game winning layup with 0.6 seconds remaining.
Despite the defeat, the team did not lose any ground in the MAAC standings. However, odds for achieving a first round tournament bye next month grew longer as Manhattan and Canisius both attained victories. This puts the Mount two games behind those teams for fifth place with five games remaining.
Some key individual highlights from the Fairfield game include three triples from Raflo, giving her 54 on the year. The total ties her with Myriam Baccouche for the second-most as a junior in Mount history and puts her within eight of the top 10 in a single season for the program.
Jaedyn Jamison continues to be a presence on defense, getting the redshirt sophomore within a couple blocks of the class record book.
SCOUTING MARIST
Since defeating the Mountaineers back on January 19, the Red Foxes have gone winless, faltering in their last eight games. On a grueling Buffalo trip, they fell by 16 to the Golden Griffins and 26 to the Purple Eagles. Zaria Shazer continues to have a strong season for Marist with 14.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. Kiara Fisher averages 9.8 points per game and Catie Cunningham averages 7.3 rebounds. Lexie Tarul is a three-point threat with 40 triples on the year.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
When members of the Northeast Conference together, Mount St. Mary's held the upper hand by winning 15 out of 17 games. Since joining the MAAC last year, Marist has taken control with three consecutive victories.
LOOKING AHEAD
Saturday (Feb. 24) sees the Mount challenges Iona at the Hynes Athletic Center. Tip-off is at 1 p.m. from New Rochelle.
