Crucial Playoff Positioning at Stake as Mount Challenges La Salle, Villanova

MOUNT ST. MARY'S (12-9, 4-5 MAAC) Weekend at Villanova
Friday, April 7th | 9 a.m. (La Salle)
Saturday, April 8th | 4 p.m. (Villanova) | LIVE STATS

EMMITSBURG, Md. (April 6, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo has four games remaining to try and secure a spot for the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. With only six spots available, the Mount attempts to put themselves in prime position to be one of those teams, taking on La Salle and Villanova this weekend.

MOUNT UPDATE

Competing last weekend at VMI, the Mountaineers went 1-2, falling to ranked LIU and Wagner before rallying in the finale to defeat the host Keydets. Ana Luisa Cotta scored six goals in the victory, and Pip Piper recorded 24 saves over six quarters, including 17 against the Seahawks.

Cotta overtook Annefleur ten Bloemendal for the lead in goals on the team, 42 to 40. Robyn Currie has the most assists at 35, with ten Bloemendal leading in steals (38) and drawn exclusions (56). Cotta has the highest number of field blocks at 29.

THE MAAC PICTURE

Undefeated Marist and Wagner, both 8-0, have essentially secured spots in the tournament, as has LIU, who have begun MAAC play 6-1. That leads seven teams competing for three spots. If Siena and VMI, both winless, are taken out that leaves five teams.

But since the conference is split into divisions, that makes the competition more fierce, in particular the Red Division where both La Salle and Villanova reside. Wagner and LIU are both in that division, meaning the Explorers and Wildcats are fighting each other for the same spot.

In the opposing Blue Division, Iona, St. Francis Brooklyn, and Mount are battling for two spots. The Gaels (4-3) and the Terriers (4-4) sit ahead of the Mountaineers (4-5) at present.

LOOKING AHEAD

The final regular season weekend takes place at Iona on April 15th. The Mount faces Marist and Siena.
