LEXINGTON, Va. (March 28, 2026) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo split the first day of their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games at VMI, claiming a 12-8 victory over LIU while losing to Wagner 11-7. With the split, the Mountaineers move to an overall record of 8-13 with an MAAC conference record of 3-4.
The Sharks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead throu8fgh the first quarter as the Mount defense limited the damage. Following the first quarter loss, the Mount offense stepped up their game, tying LIU in the second quarter 3-3 while heading into the halftime break down 5-4. But in the third quarter, the Mountaineers truly showcased their offensive superiority, scoring on five occasions while shutting the Sharks out through the end of the quarter. The Mount scored four more goals in the fourth, limiting LIU to three scores to round the game and the victory out.
In game one,
Natalie Marquiss led the Mount scoring efforts with four goals and an assist followed by a pair of hat tricks from both
Anna Kegel and
Lotte Schreurs.
Lucia Redaelli,
Laila Holloway,
Leilani Horan, and
Kiele Davidson all posted solo scores while
Olivia Fernie recorded eight saves in goal.
Returning to Lexington a few hours later, the Mountaineers played out to a close 2-2 tie against Wagner to begin the game against the Seahawks. The Mount returned in the second quarter, posting four goals while only allowing two oppositions scores, heading into the halftime break with a narrow lead. But the Seahawks rebounded in the third, outscoring the Mount 3-1 in the third followed by a shutout, 4-0 fourth quarter win for the Staten Islanders, rounding out the loss.
Schreurs once again showed out in the second game, posting a hat trick while Kegel, Redaelli, and Horan all posted solo scores. Redaelli also recorded eight steals in the game against the Seahawks while Fernie recorded four saves in between the sticks.
