Conference Play Sprints Off for Women’s Water Polo at Marist

EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 17, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo begins Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competition this weekend with three games at Marist.
 
MOUNT UPDATE
 
For the out of conference schedule, the Mountaineers finished with a record of 8-4. Their most recent tournament was a 2-2 showing at Convergence in California, beating Westcliff and La Verne.
 
Shooting 41 percent over the first 12 games, the Mount registered 153 goals and 115 assists. Annefleur ten Bloemendal is the leader in goal scoring with 30 and Ana Luisa Cotta has the most assists with 17.
 
Out of the 144 team steals, ten Bloemendal has the highest number at 24, edging the 23 from Heather Lock. The team commits more exclusions than they draw, at 116-100. In the cage, Pip Piper has the most saves with 75 over eight games but Samantha Bright has the best rate, saving 59 percent of shots.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
 
The weekend serves the opener for all three teams the Mountaineers will face. Iona also competed at the Convergence, going 1-3 on a challenging schedule. The Gaels defeated La Verne, 17-15, for their lone win.
 
St. Francis Brooklyn is off to a 9-1 start, including a win over the Mount on February 12th. The team went 2-1 at the Princeton Invitational with their only defeat coming to the ranked Tigers in a true road contest.
 
Marist received votes in the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association poll. The Red Foxes have traveled far and wide in non-conference, playing games in Hawaii, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, California and Arizona. With a record of 11-8, they went 1-2 at the ASU Invite and defeated California Baptist 18-16 in a road game.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
 
For the second conference weekend at Siena March 25th and 26th, the Mount will essentially take one the same schedule, facing the Gaels and Terriers before challenging the host Saints.
