EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 3, 2023) – Moving up the Hudson River Valley following a defeat at Marist, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball looks to stem the tide of a losing streak with a game against the Siena Saints.
MOUNT UPDATE
Falling 65-54 to the Red Foxes, the Mount now carry a three-game slide and hope to avoid a season-long fourth consecutive defeat. In last Thursday's contest,
Jessica Tomasetti led with 12 points and
McKenzie Matheny added eight rebounds, a new career high.
The dubious streak also prohibits the team from earning the 800
th victory in program history. They have been holding at 799 since their most recent victory January 21
st at Saint Peter's.
As for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) standings, Manhattan won Thursday to take sole possession of seventh place. If the season ended today, the eighth-place Mountaineers would challenge ninth-seeded Canisius in the first round of the conference tournament.
Michaela Harrison remains the points leader at 13.1 per game, and
Isabella Hunt leads in rebounding, assists, and steals.
Jo Raflo is the block leader with 26 during the campaign.
RE-EXAMINING THE SAINTS
Siena sits in the clustered top five of the MAAC, tied with Fairfield at 8-4 and sitting three games behind league leader Iona. The team is coming off a 72-48 victory over the Peacocks in Jersey City. Hannah Finnerty came off the bench to score 18.
The Saints' freshmen continue to impress. Finnish guard Teresa Seppala is the reigning conference Rookie of the Week, locked in with sophomore Anajah Brown as Siena's points leaders. Elisa Mevius averages 9.7 points and leads the team in assists with 94 and steals with 47.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Resuming after 27 years, the Mountaineers and Saints met last December with the Mount winning 65-59. Moving to 2-0 all-time over Siena, the win also carried significant as the first victory in the MAAC since aligning with the conference.
LOOKING AHEAD
A three-game homestand begins next Saturday (Feb. 11) when the Mount hosts Saint Peter's. The team will face Quinnipiac and Iona during the home stretch.
