EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 23, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's water polo has three games coming up this weekend as they participate in the Grove City Classic.
MOUNT UPDATE
At the Bucknell Invitational two weeks ago, the Mount went 1-2, defeating Mercyhurst for the second time this year while falling to St. Francis Brooklyn and #14 Princeton.
Annefluer ten Bloemendal had the most goals with eight, and
Pip Piper registered double digit saves in two out of three contests.
ten Bloemendal has 15 goals to lead the team along with 14 steals.
Ana Luisa Cotta has assisted on 13 of the team's scores. As a unit, the Mount has 55 goals on 156 shots, and are drawing more exclusions than the competition, 49-46.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Grove City opens their 2023 season with their home tournament. The Wolverines finished 10-9 in 2022 and finished fifth at the CWPA Division III East. They are coached by Jocelyn Bernhardt in her fourth year at the helm.
Penn State Behrend makes the short trek to Grove City seeking their first win. The Lions stand 0-4 with defeats against La Salle, Mercyhurst, Wittenberg and Iona. Shannon Young scored a hat trick with two steals in the team's most recent game against the Gaels. Young tied with Marley Persch for the team's lead in 2022 goals with 47 each.
Gannon was a participant at Mercyhurst's Robinette Invitational, picking up their first victory of the year against Wittenberg to wrap up their stay. The Golden Knights are coming off a 10-14 campaign last season, but have had to find new solutions for scoring after their top two scorers graduated out of the program. Jade Strickland has the most 2022 goals among returners with 37.
