EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 9, 2023) – Following a weekend featuring single games, the Mount St. Mary's women's water polo readies for tournament weekends with three games at the Bucknell Invite.
MOUNT UPDATE
Starting at 2-0, the Mount defeated Saint Francis U 14-12 on January 28
th and Mercyhurst 15-4 last Sunday. Graduate student
Annefleur ten Bloemendal leads in goals with seven, including four in the win over the Lakers.
Ana Luisa Cotta leads in assists with seven, along with six scores. Keeper
Pip Piper has 25 saves and eight steals, both team highs.
The four goals surrendered to the Lakers were the second fewest in program history. Interesting enough, the lowest total of two also came against Mercyhurst during the 2022 season.
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Merychurst will be out to avenge the 15-4 score from last Sunday as they seek their first win of the year. Hanna Good contributed half of the team's scoring during the game, and Panna Mozbauer made 10 saves.
St. Francis Brooklyn opens their season at Bucknell, playing La Salle Friday before facing the Mountaineers. Last year the Terriers went 9-20 with a 4-12 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. They won two nailbiters over the Mount in 2022, taking games by scores of 12-11 and 9-8.
Princeton hosted a tournament January 28
th and 29
th, going 4-1 to start the year. That includes a win by forfeiture from Bucknell. Kayla Yelensky leads the Tigers in goals with 11, and Rachael Carver has compiled 12 assists and five goals on the young season. Lindsey Lucas has started all four games in goal, logging 52 saves.
LOOKING AHEAD
A tournament hosted by Grove City College awaits the Mount February 24
th-25
th. Mount St. Mary's faces Grove City, Penn State Behrend and Gannon.
