EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 1, 2023) – Mount St. Mary's women's basketball make their first trip to Poughkeepsie since 1997, facing the Marist Red Foxes for the second time this season.
Marist took the first meeting back on January 19
th by an 83-77 final. The Red Foxes' Kiara Fisher and Mount's
Michaela Harrison each put on shooting clinics, but it was Fisher's 44 points to gave the upper hand to the visitors that night.
MOUNT UPDATE
For the first time since December the Mount finds itself trying to shed a losing streak. After suffering a grueling one-point loss on the road to Fairfield, the team came home and surrendered a second half lead to a surging Niagara Purple Eagles squad. The 73-54 defeat puts the Mount at 4-7 during their inaugural season in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), sitting in a seventh place tie with Manhattan.
Jo Raflo tallied her first career double-double against Niagara, posted career highs in points and rebounds. The sophomore sits on the precipice on averaging 10 points for the season, her first sporting the Blue & White.
Mount St. Mary's is hoping to break a cold snap on Thursdays this season. The team has fallen in all six games played on the weeknight. They also look for a winning month heading towards postseason play, as the two defeats dropped their ultimate January marks to 3-4.
RE-EXAMINING THE RED FOXES
Marist is the gatekeeper between the top and bottom halves of the MAAC standings, boasting an even 5-5 record and holding down sixth place. Since the last meeting with the Mount, the Red Foxes split the two contests – beating Saint Peter's and faltering against Quinnipiac.
The team's three top scorers – Zaria Shazier, Fisher, and Kendall Krick – all continue to hold steady in the scoring department. Shazier leads in points per game (15.4) and rebounding (6.6 RPG). Another challenge in facing the Red Foxes is 6-foor-5 Maeve Donnelly, averaging 4.3 boards and earning 35 blocks.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Marist's win on January 19
th gave the Red Foxes their third win in the series. Mount St. Mary's has the upper hand 15-3, with those wins coming when both teams were co-members of the Northeast Conference in the 1990s.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Mount will stay on the road to face Siena on Saturday (Feb. 4).
