EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 27, 2023) – Winter Homecoming presents a statement opportunity for Mount St. Mary's women's basketball as they host Niagara Saturday afternoon.
MOUNT UPDATE
In a bizarre ending, Mount St. Mary's succumbed to Fairfield by one point last Thursday. A technical foul allowed the Stags to take flip the score to 54-53 as time expired, winning on walk-off free throws.
The Mount stands tied for seventh place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with Manhattan. Marist in sixth place stands a half game ahead of both sides for sixth place. Saturday's game marks the start of the second half of league play.
Michaela Harrison maintains her team lead in scoring, bumping up to 14 points per game after scoring 17 against Fairfield.
Jessica Tomasetti and
Natalie Villaflor continue to average double figures, and
Aryna Taylor has come off the bench to post double figures in four straight games.
STUDYING THE PURPLE EAGLES
Niagara runs through the dynamic duo of siblings Angel and Aaliyah Parker. One of the two leads the Purple Eagles in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. Angel is the team's best scorer at 17.1 points per game, while Aaliyah is the top rebounder at a little over seven boards per game.
Blasting to an 8-2 start in MAAC play, the Purple Eagles have won six straight including last Wednesday's 82-70 triumph over area rival Canisius.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
There have been three previous meetings between the Mountaineers and the Purple Eagles. Mount won the first meeting in 1989 by a 79-73 score, but the Purple Eagles have captured the last two, including a 53-51 nail biting decision in 2015.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's makes the trek to the Hudson Valley next weekend, facing Marist Thursday (Feb. 2) and Siena Saturday (Feb. 4).
