EMMITSBURG, Md. (January 18, 2023) – Two teams bring their identical records to Knott Arena Thursday for a grudge match, as Mount St. Mary's women's basketball welcomes the Marist Red Foxes for the first time since 1997.
With each team at 7-9 and with a 3-4 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), both are locked in a three-way tie for sixth place with Manhattan.
MOUNT UPDATE
Five different Mountaineers scored 10 or more, with a strong start from
Jo Raflo and a strong finish from
Aryna Taylor giving the Mount a 68-58 win over Canisius last Saturday. The victory improved the Mount's mark to 7-1 at home.
By limiting turnovers and creating second chance points through effective rebounding, the team managed to win despite getting outshot by the Golden Griffins. The Mount is 6-1 when they turn the ball over less than the opponent and 3-1 when they match or out rebound the competition. Defense also held firm by holding the other side below 60 points, where the team is a perfect 5-0 this year.
SCOUTING THE RED FOXES
Marist is coming off a defeat against Fairfield where they posted a season-low 34 points in a defensive slugfest. MAAC wins for the Red Foxes include a 63-55 triumph over Niagara, the second place team in the league, along with victories over Manhattan and Saint Peter's.
Junior Zaria Shazer leads the team in points (14.5 per game), rebounds (6.6) and assists (2.7). Shazer is one of three players posting double figures for the Red Foxes, joined by Kiara Fisher and Kendall Krick.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Co-members of the Northeast Conference from 1989-1997, the Mountaineers and Red Foxes challenged each other 17 times during that span. That timeline coincided with the Mount's heyday of three conference championships in the mid-1990s, giving the Mount 15 wins in those meetings. Marist captured victories in 1993 and 1997.
The two sides met in the 1993 NEC title match, which was an 82-61 win for Mount St. Mary's. It was the first of three straight conference championships for the team.
LOOKING AHEAD
Mount St. Mary's travels to Jersey City on Saturday (Jan. 21) to face Saint Peter's.
