EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 9, 2022) – Making their fourth straight appearance in the Northeast Conference semifinals, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball hopes to return to the title game for a second consecutive year. Their opponent is also seeking a championship return as Wagner comes to Knott Arena in a rematch of the 2021 title bout.
This is the 15
th time the Mount has earned the right to be counted among the final four in the NEC. They are 8-6 in their previous efforts. The latest Mountaineers lost the 2019 game to Robert Morris but beat Fairleigh Dickinson in the 2021 contest. In 2020, the Mount and FDU were set to compete, but that event fell victim to the COVID-19 shutdown.
THE MATCHUP
After a 53-51 nail biter last February 10
th in Emmitsburg, the Mount upped their record against Wagner to 49-19 all-time. Dating back to 1987, lengthy winning streaks in the 1990s and 2010s helped boost the Mountaineers' record.
Wagner took both regular season games at the tail end of the 2020-21 campaign. The second win came in a 73-68 double overtime triumph.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
Matching their longest win streak of the year at four games, Mount St. Mary's took care of business against Saint Francis U for the second game in a row. Three Mountaineers posted double figures, led by
Michaela Harrison with 23.
Jessica Tomasetti set a career high in rebounds with seven.
Kayla Agentowicz was one of the three players in double figures. The team is 11-1 when the graduate student posts 10 or more, and the lone defeat came by a single point at Loyola.
Kendall Bresee still seeks to become the 29
th player in team history to score 1,000 points as a Mount player and the 11
th to do it in three seasons. With seven points in the SFU game, Bresee has five more to go. Transferring from George Washington after her sophomore year, she surpassed 1,000 career points on February 3
rd in a game with the Merrimack Warriors.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS
Led by First Team All-NEC performer Emilija Krista Grava, Wagner defended the Spiro Sports Center with a 66-55 win over LIU in the quartefinal. After giving up 20 points to the Sharks in the opening quarter, the Seahawks limited their competition to six in the second period, taking the lead and maintaining it to the finish.
Krista Grava was the leading scorer and rebounder, but five players posted double figures in the win. That includes Zhaneia Thybulle and Drayah Heyward with 11 each. Both can supply points as demonstrated, but Thybulle is the lead assist giver with 143 dimes, and Heyward the leading swiper with 62 steals.
A strong non-conference showing paved the way to a 10-8 record for the Seahawks, highlighted by a 63-59 victory over the regular season champion Fairleigh Dickinson Knights.
LOOKING AHEAD
The advancing team plays in the NEC Championship on March 13
th. Fairleigh Dickinson hosts the winner of this semifinal should they emerge victorious, and Mount St. Mary's/Wagner hosts should Bryant win.
