EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 18, 2022) – With four games left in Northeast Conference play, Mount St. Mary's women's basketball has some work to do to secure a coveted top four spot in the conference tournament and a home playoff game. The first opportunity arrives Saturday when they battle Long Island University in part two of a Brooklyn road trip.
THE MATCHUP
Mount St. Mary's is looking for their seventh straight win over the Sharks. The sixth win came on January 6th, when the Mount took a 70-54 decision in Emmitsburg. LIU's last victory came in 2019 when they were known as the Blackbirds – a 71-61 triumph came at the Steinberg Wellness Center. After the 2019-20 season, LIU's Brooklyn and Post campuses merged athletic department, taking on the moniker of Sharks.
MOUNTAINEER REPORT
The Mount almost overcame a 17-point halftime deficit against St. Francis Brooklyn Thursday, narrowing the gap to a single point twice before falling 58-53. The defeat removed the team from contention for a regular season title, as Fairleigh Dickinson now has a four-game advantage in the standings with four to play and the tiebreaker.
At 64.6 points a contest, Mount St. Mary's edges St. Francis Brooklyn and Merrimack for the top scoring offense in the NEC. Field-goal percentage is an even wider margin, as Mount's .430 is a clear two percentage points over the Terriers' .405.
Kendall Bresee delivered 18 points in the game against the Terriers to maintain her league leading scoring average (15.6 PPG).
Kayla Agentowicz also continues the lead the NEC in field goal percentage (.525) and three-point percentage (.464).
SCOUTING THE SHARKS
LIU reversed a two-game losing streak with an overtime victory over Saint Francis U. The Sharks in the middle of the pack of the NEC, standing seventh overall and sixth in the tournament seeding. If the season ended here, LIU would be the Mount's quarterfinal challenger.
Senior Brandy Thomas led all Sharks with 19 points in the victory against the Red Flash and is one of two players averaging double figures for the team. Along with her 12 points per game, she grabs six boards per contest which also serves as a team best. LIU boasts one of the league's top freshmen as well, as Emaia O'Brien averages 9.8 points per game with 37 rebounds and 27 assists on the year.
LOOKING AHEAD
Two final regular season games remain on the schedule. The Mount welcomes Sacred Heart Thursday (Feb. 24) and Central Connecticut next Saturday (Feb. 26).
