EMMITSBURG, Md. (February 17, 2022) – Five games await Mount St. Mary's women's water polo this weekend – all taking place in Erie. The Mount faces Penn State Behrend in a single non-conference clash before participating in the Curtis Robinette Memorial Invite, hosted by Mercyhurst University.
MOUNT UPDATE
The Princeton Invite served as the Mount's toughest test of the season last weekend. Even though the team went 0-4, there were several promising moments including halftime leads over St. Francis Brooklyn and Iona, as well as a strong second half against #17 LIU.
Sophomore
Ana Luisa Cotta had a solid weekend on the stat sheet, registering 10 goals. She joins freshman
Rebecca Valentine as the second double digit goal scorer. Valentine continues to lead the group with 22 scores, followed by Cotta's 15.
Freshman
Robyn Currie serves as the steals leader with 12, and shares the assists lead with goalkeeper
Samantha Bright at nine. Bright, the primary netminder, has earned 71 saves and a 54% stoppage rate this season.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Behrend opens the 2022 season with the Mount after a 3-5 abbreviated season a year ago. Shannon Young led the Lions in goals a year ago.
Gannon stands at 1-3 with a triple overtime victory against VMI, 12-11. The Golden Knights then played three familiar Mount foes, falling to Wagner, Saint Francis U and St. Francis Brooklyn.
McKendree comes in at 1-0, defeating Augustana 20-9 on February 12
th. Jaleh Moaddeli had eight goals for the Bearcats, and Sydney Kane had eight saves.
Salem has a misleading 0-8 record, as the Tigers contested a difficult schedule which included #2 Stanford, #3 UCLA, #6 Hawai'i and #17 LIU. Annefleur ten Bloememdal is one of three Tigers with double digit points, leading the pack with 19.
Host Mercyhurst is riding on a win over Wittenberg in Ohio two weeks ago, which was their first of the year. The weekend invitational honors Curtis Robinette, the Lakers' longtime coach who passed away from cancer last year. Mount coach
Alyssa Diacono served as a graduate assistant under Robinette before arriving in Emmitsburg.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Salem and Mercyhurst have challenged the Mount once each. The Tigers won a 20-8 decision last season, with the Mountaineers beat the Lakers 11-5 on February 5
th at the Wittenberg Invite.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Mountaineers make their home debut as Collegiate Water Polo Association play opens, hosting Princeton next Friday (Feb. 25) at the ARCC Swimming Pool.
