Box Score Towson, Md. (February 15, 2022)—Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse fell at Towson, 13-8, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Griffin McGinley made 15 saves while
Steven Schmitt scored twice to pace the Mount in the game.
It was a quick start for the Mountaineers (1-2) as
Noah Daniels scored just 14 seconds into the game for a 1-0 advantage. The score remained that way until midway through the first quarter when Towson took advantage after a Mount turnover and Nick DeMaio was able to fire a shot past Mount goalkeeper McGinley. The Mount scored twice in a span of 14 seconds to take a 3-1 advantage.
Brendan Lantieri was able to fire a shot home with 2:08 left in the opening quarter for a 2-1 lead.
Connor Beals then won the face-off, beat a double team, and was able to score 14 seconds later for a two-goal lead. The Tigers cut the deficit in half on a James Avanzato score with 31 seconds left in the quarter.
Towson evened the score in the opening minute of the second quarter on DeMaio's second goal of the game, and Austin Ducommun added a go-ahead goal just 45 seconds later to force a Mount timeout. Avenzato made it a 4-0 run with a goal after a Mount turnover in the midfield for a 5-3 lead with 9:26 left in the opening half. A transition goal by Schmitt on a feed from Daniels stopped the Towson run and pulled the Mount within one at 5-4. Avanzato's third goal of the game with 5:32 left in the second quarter made it 6-4. Neither team was able to find the back of the cage again in the half.
Towson (1-1) outshot the Mount, 29-17, in the first half while each team had 14 ground balls and 10 turnovers in the opening 30 minutes. McGinley made 11 first-half saves while Beals won 7-of-12 face-offs in the half.
After Towson opened the second half with a goal,
Jared McMahon connected for his first goal of the game on a nice feed from Daniels to make it 7-5 with 9:04 left in the third quarter. Towson countered with the final four goals of the quarter for an 11-5 advantage. DeMaio capped the run with his third goal of the game.
Towson opened the final quarter with the first two goals to make it a six-goal run in taking a 13-5 lead. The Mount scored three times over the final 1:13 of the game to make the final score, 13-8.
Kyle DeCrispino started the run with
Justin Weick following with an extra-man goal. Schmitt's second goal of the game closed out the scoring.
Kyle Cullen picked up an assist on each of the three scores.
Towson held a 44-38 edge in shots in the game. The Mount had 19 turnovers compared to Towson's 20 while Beals won 15-of-25 face-offs in the contest. Schmitt led the Mount with a pair of goals while Daniels added a goal and two assists for a three-point game. Cullen also finished with a three-point effort with three assists. Beals and Daniels each had six ground balls in the game. Avanzato led Towson with three goals and two assists while DeMaio added a hat trick. Kyle Berkley added a goal and four assists in the win. McGinley made 15 saves while allowing 13 goals in 58:14 of action for the Mount while Shane Brennan had 12 saves in 54:13 of time for Towson.
