EMMITSBURG, Md. (November 3, 2022) – Mount St. Mary's bowling takes on a field of eight other teams – all of which are Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) – when they travel to the Richmond area for the Virginia Union Invitational.

COMPETING TEAMS
Virginia Union (hosts), Bowie State, Coppin State, Fayetteville State, Howard, Mount St. Mary's, Norfolk State, Shaw, Virginia State

SETTING THE SCENE

Participating in Adelphi's Dezy Strong Invite, the Mount took sixth place in a challenging field. Earning a total pinfall of 12,172 across the weekend, the team defeated Bryant, Bloomfield, St. Anselm, UAB and twice against Tulane.

Freshman Sierra Calo stepped into the anchor role Friday, posting a 19.88 Baker frame average on the first day. Senior Amanda Yeung contributed the highest individual score with a 969 in traditional play, then added a pace setting 19.75 Baker frame average during Sunday brackets.

Mount St. Mary's enters the VUU Invitational with a 21-12 record.

FORMAT

Following a traditional style, the Virginia Union Invitational begins with five games of Baker pinfall Friday, five Team Matches on Saturday and best-of-seven Baker play on Sunday.

THE FIELD

All the teams come from either the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) or the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The Mount has previous histories with every school in the field except Shaw and boast a 47-3 record against the group.

Coppin State is a much-improved unit this season, securing a third-place finish at the Mount Shootout. They are also the most common opponent against the Mount with 19 meetings. Bowie State is the reigning champion from the CIAA, going 47-11 during the season last year. Competing at the same NCAA Regional, the Bulldogs and Mountaineers did not cross paths in Erie, but have faced off four prior times with the Mount winning them all.

LOOKING AHEAD

From November 18th-20th, the always challenging Hawk Classic takes place in Millsboro, Delaware. Hosted by Maryland Eastern Shore, the tournament brings in some of the top bowling programs in the nation.
